in pvp it's not very good at range because it flies straight, unless your opponent is locked into a long animation, I guess. it's very strong at close range if you know when it's best to use it.
I dunno about pve.

The Graven talismans can be stacked and add a 12% increase to spell damage. Comet can also be charged for an additional 15% damage increase with the Godfrey Icon. The Magic Scorpion, Crystal Tear, Ritual Sword talisman, and Terra Magica can be used as well. Lusat's Glintstone Staff at 80 INT, +10, has a sorcery scaling of 413.

Basically, you can stack more damage buffs with a sorcery than with an AoW. If you can't stack these buffs yet, then use ice-spear for now. When you can use all of these buffs, sorcery's become very strong.
Not necessarily for the projectile. Magic and Cold were very close in damage.
Big thank you to mentioning the Sword of Alexander. I got the platinum but needed to power up for the DLC and never knew about this item. Just went and got it and what a difference!
