Progressing after the cardinal sin?

Do you have to go through the Lyndel catacombs after commiting the cardinal sin? It's the first path that presents itself but I'm not very enthusiastic about having to go through this again, if it's not really mandatory to progress.

You need to get to the spot where you fought discount Godfrey. Exploring a bit can be beneficial if you want to get some +2 talismans.

Yeah, but the usual path there seems to be trashed and the only obvious path was the catacombs, so I wonder if a way opened up through there.

You need to get to a tower with a lift. When you spawn in the capital go straight to the castle ruins and you'll see a tower on the right with stairs leading to it and there will be a lift.

Alright, got it. I took the direction the site of grace points you at (the hole to the catacombs) as a hint from the game, but I guess I was wrong about that.
