ELDEN RING

ELDEN RING

The worst mechanic in every Soulsbornering game...
...is definitely that you drop all your souls/runes when you die. I know it's there to make death more meaningful, but especially in an open world game like Elden Ring you can go to areas or bosses that you are underleveled for. It discourages exploration in some sense, because if you die, you can't really say "I don't like this area, maybe I come back later", because all your runes are there. And like I said, maybe it's an area you aren't supposed to be there yet. The way I would fix it, is that you would drop half your runes, so you can cut your losses if you die, instead of punishing you and you kind of have to try the same area again...
It wouldn't be so bad if it was just like that in the From Software games, but every game that tried to mimic Dark Souls, like Hollow Knight of course copy the worst mechanic of the game. You know what would make an Open World or Metroidvania game, that's bloody hard and you can go to places where you certainly die if you are not prepared, so you have to explore elsewhere to progress, better? That you have to go back to the place where you shouldn't be yet after you die! No it does not.

This is the first time in 14 years of souls someone complains about that. Another opinion thread, thanks for sharing your very subjective opinion OP.

Also remember there are ways to prevent souls/rune loss when you die, using those tools in advance usually helps you know. Specially when you are going to explore a dangerous area.

The sacrificial twig is perfect for under-level exploration and boss fights

Thanks, I didn't know that. But I guess it's a limited item like that ring in Dark Souls 1?
What also can help, I just found out, if you can't beat a boss, press Alt+F4 as you die, you spawn outside of the gate, die there and drop the runes outside of the boss (but I take no responsibility if something happens to your save file ^^).

My opinion still stands, though, because 99% of your playtime you won't have one of these items.

Twigs drop from wormfaces in Altus plateau and Farum so they are not that rare as similar items from oher souls.

Also a lot of merchants sell them so you can probaly get your hands in more than 10 twigs without killing a singe wormface.

I mean running past enemies in these games is very easy. I think the only game where it wasn't always that easy is DS2 because of the huge gank spams and slower rolls.

The only issue would be if you entered a boss arena I guess

Another solution is to spend your runes before you enter a completely unknown area. Don't risk more than you can afford to lose.

I never really mind that mechanic since I use my souls instead of hoarding them, And when I get to the point where currency is useless.. I just don't care about losing them.

You seem to have souls experience. Why not just using them when you know that there will be a boss at some point you dunno yet ? Not having enough for lvl up surely is an reason but that can be countered by just farming enough to get rid of them.

I mean.. there are guys losing their ♥♥♥♥ after dying with like 5 k souls lol. I hope you aren't one of them.

I think Demons Souls is really punishing in that regard. You lose souls and half of your healthbar. Then you have to fight through the whole area and beat the boss at the end.
ER is easy compared to that. You have many options and esp. you have no big running sections before a boss.

especially when there are bonfires every 2 cms and before every boss room

Just buy arrows or something or be more efficient with your golden rune usage.

I lose runes once every couple months. And I can count on one hand the number of times it’s happened in 1,000 hours of playtime.

If it’s happening to you more often, you need to change how you approach the game. And I don’t mean becoming more skilled. You’re just playing wrong.

I just hate farming in general, so I try to avoid it. It just breaks the flow of every game...
I only lose my ♥♥♥♥ after dying at the exact same spot like ten times ^^
I enjoy the "Rogue" aspect of it. Each life feels like a fresh run with a new possible upgrade. At least, thats how I have always played these games.

This is one the basic principles of this genre. It's part of the experience. You can't lose anything permanently except time invested. You can try any stage of the game (from any SoG) as often as you want.

I lost a lot of runes and didnt have to farm them. Ended up with 120+ lvl. and its a part of an experience when you lose them or have risk losing them anyway.

Interesting perspective. I guess a Soulslike where you start as a new character every time you die could be neat.

Sort of, except bosses... If you lose the runes you got from a boss, you have to kill a bunch of mobs to get the same amount back.
