You can't progress with gear or skills without engaging with the game's PvE content.

That said, the PVP is damn good.

Unless you do the PvE game first you'll have no stats and no good gear.

No.

PvP is ... not good and you are probably better off playing Dark Souls as it's PvP is better from what I've been told. (Never played Dark Souls so I can't speak to if it's PvP is actually better than Elden Ring from personal experience, just second hand.)

Not unless the specific style of invasions appeals to you so far that you're willing to ignore massive issues with the game.

It's a mess on almost every level. Technical (I crash about once every 30ish multiplayer matches, a sixth of your opponents are so laggy they skip animations), balance (both in and between weapon classes), design (oh hey look, you can infinitely summon other players! and spawn 2.7 miles away from the host! and-)

It can be fun, but you have to put up with a helluva lot to get there.
pvp is amazing, all the different builds and combos you're going to love it. elden ring really is one of those games we only get once ever 15 years.

I only care about the pvp in these games, so yes, it's possible.

As much as I do enjoy duel pvp...no. And I think colosseums are even making it worse for new players cause you cant choose your opponent so you'll end up getting matched against meta cheese builds over and over again

It's a pvpve game.
Pve is great, and lets you make a build you use for pvp.

DS1's pvp is the worst simply because of the broken backstab mechanic. just because of that. otherwise it was fun.

PvP is enjoyable, though I recommend Dark Souls II's PvP – when it works properly lol. Dark Souls II seems to be much more prone to 'phantom hitboxes' and it has the problem of Soul Memory matchmaking, but I have sunk in over 1000 hours into the game across multiple platforms.

Heavy armour is more useful, poise is more useful and doesn't merely exist during hyper armour frames, and there is much more viability when it comes to build variety in PvP. Dark Souls II has been the only Soulsborne title where I frequently saw 71%+ equipment load builds in PvP due to hit trading with heavy armour and high poise being just as viable of an option as attaining builds that possess medium to low equipment loads.

Again, when everything is playing out properly, I would say that Dark Souls II is the best PvP title. Dark Souls III and Elden Ring are good games for PvP as well, though Elden Ring currently lacks PvP modes outside of the colosseum and basic invasions. Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III possess the most PvP features and covenants, though I personally believe that Dark Souls III suffers from a poor poise system and weak builds that exceed a 70% equipment load. Unlike Dark Souls II, juggernaut-style builds in Dark Souls III and Elden Ring will not make use of poise and stagger resistance unless they are making use of weapons that possess hyper armour frames.

Lastly, Dark Souls III and Elden Ring gain points for allowing players to respec their characters and change their appearance without having to create an entirely new character. This makes it easy and convenient for players to try new builds without having to play through the game again.

PvP is a fun afterthought, the focus here is PvE, because there are a myriad of overpowered skills and spells that destroy PvP balance. Some will say "git gud" or "adapt", but let's be honest here, there is no fun to be had if you have to switch out half of your talismans and weapons midfight because your opponent has a diametrical opposite build from yours that will destroy you unless you have the counter for it.

In prior games the rules were simpler, and everyone had to abide by them. In Elden Ring it is a free for all.

Too hard to answer. People who liked DS3 PvP I predict having a hard time liking this one. Just for PvP fun, maybe.

Passive poise is cheap and broken system.

DS3 solved it, that's the truth.

DS2 PvP is ok, but game is ugly as hell and animation is sub-PS1 tier. Impossible to play, game got old too fast.
