What's with the damage in PvP?|
I do basically no damage, even with my best weapons, but my opponents do half my health with every hit with basically any weapon from spears to daggers. What's going on?

This can depend on so many factors. A lot of people in PvP use min-maxed builds, for example, which 99% of the time means leveling vigor to 50-60, so they have around 2k health.
Otherwise, it just depends on your build. What is your weapon AR ?

I don't know what AR stands for

Attack Rating. It's the number you see when you look at your character stats for the slot where the weapon is equipped. It tells you what the raw damage of the weapon is, added together if it's more than one damage type.
Sorry, it's a confusing term as it doesn't actually appear anywhere in-game, but is the common term used by the community. Need to stop assuming that everyone immediately knows what it means.

Do you mean Attack Power? It's 648

Yeah that might be the issue. Coupled with the fact that a lot of people use Golden Vow, which increases your defense, and other such factors, it might be that.
What weapon are you using? For greatswords, aim for over 1,000 if possible (with buffs, etc.)
Some builds will do more damage per hit (slower weapons), while others don't have as much but are super spammy, resulting in more DPS overall.
It really just comes down to modifying your stats/weapon upgrades until you get the result that works. There's just too many factors to go into all of them, there usually isn't a single explanation for all cases.

What level are you? like the other person said most people who do PvP go in with builds optimized for PvP. And a build consists of more than just stat point investments. What are your stats sitting at currently?

I'd imagine the biggest reason you're getting 1-2 shot by other players is because your HP is low. I recommend having no less than 1,900 health for PvP so you don't get 1 shot by everything. Most people with optimal builds will be hitting you at the lower levels for like 800, and the meta level for like a base of 1.1k, so if you only have 1,400-1,600 hp you're gonna have a bad time.

It's my highest base damage weapon leveled to 20 (collosal fire hammer)... How in the world am I supposed to get a sword to do almost twice that? And I thought there would be some sort of balancing, so high level players don't just steamroll everyone due to their higher stats, but I guess not.

There's soft matchmaking where you can only match into/against people who are roughly the same level. And by roughly I mean like somewhere around like 25-30 levels. It would help us more if we knew what your build was, the gear you were using and your stat distribution.

I play at R.220
Where everyone have bigs numbers.

AR 800 van still be very good. Among a set of 40ish weapons. A few drop that 1000Dmg
Now,Armor and DmgReduction will make that differences. If I snack on boil Crab while drinking my Opal CrystalTear. I get sometthing like 55% physical reduction.

Even then, super move will hurt. But 60 Vigor still handle it.

At 220 your health stat really should be 80.

Since armor does basically nothing, I'm skipping it. I'm level 117, with 1200 HP and mostly strength and stamina. I've tried a variety of weapons, and the only one that seems viable in PvP is the Bloodhound curved sword. Not that it matters, since PvP is basically unplayable due to the 1-2 second delay to everything.
Tetsuya_Kurogane Dec 9, 2022 @ 9:40am
1200 Hp is not viable. It can be worthy of a crown, but in large scale fight you will be spam to death.

So I should be, like, level 200 to be viable in PvP?

Why?
That changes 1900HP into 2015HP.
Not worth it IMHO at such low level.

If you want to be able to stay standing long enough to have a fighting chance (read: die in 3-4 hits from everything rather than 2-3), you're going to want to min-max the ever-living daylights out of your maximum HP — you're likely going to be forced to go to Rennala and respec your stats so you can boost Vigor up to 50-60 and hit that 1900+ HP threshold — and back that up with a BEEFY amount of armor (preferably 30% or better).

Oh, and in terms of weapon loadout, you are functionally required to have something that's able to deal with the fast, hard-hitting, extremely low-commitment attacks thrown out by halberds and other poker weapons. This meta currently is incredibly distorting for the PVP scene, and anyone who's running a damage type that isn't Thrust is generally going to have a bad time.

It's ugly, I know, but necessary to stay relevant in PVP at basically any level.

However, if you ask me, I'd recommend you not adhere to the meta too much, lest you succumb to the salty, sweaty tryhard mindset yourself. If you're not having a fun time, put yourself first and take a break from playing.
