How do I get off of the crutch of prayerful strike?

This is my first souls like game. I played for a solid 8 hours in frustration getting my ass kicked by everything and finally gave in and followed a "get OP early" guide on youtube. Grabbed myself the Great Stars hammer and the Prayerful Strike ash in Altus Plateau. With that and some boosted levels from murdering a sleeping dragon I was able to slay Godrick the Grafted on my first try at lvl 48 on a strength/faith build.

Anyway, I am now just past that boss and desire to try other weapons and ashes, but I don't know how to play without the incredible sustain that Prayerful Strike grants. Send help.

imma be real with you generally speaking with most bosses if they swing once you can attack once if they swing twice attack twice if they swing three times or more hit them once. You can try that for attacking and also explore because exploring will help you level up and figure out how to fight against enemies properly. patience is key not gear. edit. if you are worried about gear look up the weakness on https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Elden+Ring+Wiki each boss has a weakness

My main concern is the lack of healing if I switch to a weapon w/o prayerful strike. Even vs non-boss enemies the lack of sustain becomes a problem.

your only options are to basically learn how to be patient and dodge unless you want to become a pure Miracle build

What is a miracle build?

A faith build,

Keep the character with Great Stars and make it as strong as possible leveling strength and faith thats a good build combo. Worry about changing things up on a different character. You went from messing around and getting killed to playing around with a build and theres no crutch to get away from having a strong build.
