upgrading weapons
i am used to the DS games, upgrading my main weapon until 10 with standard, and special weapons until 5 etc and after that concentrating on alternative weapons. how is that in elden ring, i read it takes until the endgame to update a weapon to +25?
how do you manage your weapons? stick to one until its fully upgraded?

+25 for normal weapons and +10 for boss/mini-boss/special (Somber stone) weapons
Normal weapon stones are +3 levels each stone (up to +24, stones that can be purchased at shop after you collect the correct item and give it to the merchant) and a final upgrade stone (+25)
Somber weapons are +1 each stone (that also can be purchased at the same shop given the item to the merchant) and a final upgrade stone (+10)

EF has answered the upgrade question.

My advice on sticking to one weapon is, don't. You will find you have a lot of extra upgrade materials. And, various bosses and enemies can be extremely resistant (even immune) or extremely weak to certain damage types. So, plan to use more than one loadout if you want an easy time of it. :)

Don't sell any weapons unless you are 100% sure you are not going to want it later.

Good Luck!

You can max 13 regular weapons and 8 unique ones per playthrough. That's 21 in total for one playthrough. I usually play around with 15, some of which are just duplicates for dual-wielding.

Weapons I'm currently upgrading on my current warrior DEX playthrough:
  1. Warhawk's Talon x2
  2. Falchion
  3. Shamshir
  4. Twinblade
  5. Forked Hatchet x2
  6. Flail
  7. Nightrider Flail
  8. Vulgar Militia Saw
  9. Whip
  10. Hookclaws
  11. Crepus's Black-Key Crossbow
  12. Steel-Wire Torch
I'm only in Liurnia of the Lakes, so this may change as time goes on.

Unless you use a guide to know where to find them you will have trouble upgrading multiple weapons until mid-way thru the game as there are a couple choke points where upgrade materials are hard to find. I think smithing stones 5 and 7 were hard for me to find in my first game.

Using a guide you can find them earlier.

Sure!

I like to upgrade weapons parallel for a few reasons. For one, it won't lock you out of multiplayer by having weapons that are upgraded too high for your level. Secondly, it lessens upgrade mistakes. In case you end up changing your mind later about something. Also, it's a nice little bit of an added challenge to have weapons that aren't too strong. I'm not good enough to do a level 1 run, but I am trying very hard to not over-level.

Level 39 attributes now
Strength 16**
Dexterity 24
Vigor 28*

*I'm using items that add +11 Vigor. So I'm actually playing with 39 vigor right now. In case you're wondering why I stopped there. I like to not go to 40 un-buffed until much later in the game.

**This is a very old character, so I messed it up when I created it (I think March). So I actually plan to strip out the strength and change it later to this:

Level 39 fixed
Dexterity 30
Vigor 28

Level 50 Proposed
Dexterity 39
Vigor 30

Also, remember that on every single zone's map, the RED map graphic cave icon thingy is a tunnel. Tunnel = upgrade materials. Understanding this will keep you from having to rely on guides which could contain spoilers.

I usually find that the +3, +6, +9, etc., are better spent to upgrade other weapons instead. That 6-cost is really high. That's how you afford multiple weapons IMO. Until you have craptons of course.
