Astrologer was great for the first few day's and I was in the process of find a way to upgrade my weapons. I thought I may have the solution when I found the jellyfish summon but sadly it's doesn't work and the game refuses to tell me why it won't work.
It doesn't help that I still don't know for sure what I'm doing.
In fact i think that you can finish the game easier as a mage than as a melee, specially if you use all the things that the game provides you (summon ashes...)
Even with a melee character, if you get ambushed by rats, dogs...they can get you in trouble even if your level is high.
If you like casting spells, give it another chance to your astrologer.
Have you met Ranni in Church of Elleh and got spirit calling bell?
I can't say I have no. So I need that for the jellyfish to work? I thought to make magic work I need a pet or summon to give me the time I need to cast.
Oh,oh, is Ranni Father Christmas?
I have seen people who play this class did it artfully. So you are probably not accustomed to this play style yet. If you have problems with wolves, try dodging first before attacking, or side step first before attacking. Basically, try to find a way to play this class effectively as many others had done so before you.
I would say, if you find the astrologer class not to your liking, try a melee class. But don't be surprised if you encounter the same problems with wolves, rats or their likes.
Edit: by the way, to get good early magic staff, go caelid. That staff will last you most of the game until you get the really good ones. (Don't want to spoil you but if you don't mind being spoiled. youtube is the answer)
As mentioned the Vagabond is a good starting class. You can also have a look on Samurai ( starts with Uchigatana).
I have enjoyed astrologer so far it's just I felt it insufficient when up against more than one. I guess from the response that I am not playing her right.
I have a problem with dodge. Even though my computer is a good one, dodge is sort of unresponsive, and only works when the stars are aligned as a triangle wearing a baseball cap. So I never rely on dodge, funny though, it always works great outside of combat.
I learned that if you press dodge while riding you horse goes into a gallop. First time I tried this when trying to escape a boss, my horse turned around and headed straight for the boss. :D
this is because most enemies are brainfarting when you are close to them, which as any other class you want to do. as a result you will not receive hits which otherwise you should have taken and annoying opposing moves can be circumvented.
yes, astrologers can kill some enemies without those enemies even fighting back at all (like night comet against invaders) , but its ultimately not worth it, to the point you might at one point just ignore any projectiles and just use carian slicer as being close and agile is just saver than ranged high damage output.
You don't have to dodge every time, try cycling your enemies. It can be effective too for some enemies.
Like someone else mentioned, to build a good mage build. You need fore knowledge of the game. It is up to you though, fore knowledge means spoilers or you can switch to a melee class and learn about the game that way before deciding to do a mainly sorcery class.
The reason for this post. Now that I am often having wolves drop on me or zombies ganging up on me I started to see the shortcomings of being a magic caster.
The only thing they can do is if you are interested in having an object that belongs to that class right away, without having to wait to find it.
Basically I always wretched, and then I manage the features as I want.
This posed yet another problem. When I target a enemy I sort of go into slow-mo, if I remove targeting my spell usually shoots of somewhere else. It resulting in button mashing target on/off/on/off.
Yeah, it's look like I need to start over with a melee class with a short animation stab or similar. No big wind up animation or I'm dead before it finish's. :)
I have seen this recommended before. Some say it's the best class for beginning, others say it's the hardest. But you can build this one up to be what you want, yes?
Get a weapon with blunt damage as well for certain enemies, per ex a Morning Star.
Level up vigor. Your damage output in early game comes from upgrading your weapons.
