Can you better explain this location and what's going on in it? This description is too vague for me to even tell whether you're still in the tutorial cave or not.
Regardless, perhaps check a walkthrough of the area you're in on YouTube? In the vast majority of cases, you run fast enough that enemies can't keep up if you just ignore them and know where you're going. Watch a video, learn the route, and then just run from point A to point B.
DONT let these people fool you!!! What you have encountered is the equivalent of an in-game god. Fromsoft uses this mechanic to encourage you to explore the cave and level up before even thinking of facing him.
Edit: the tutorial below may be to general. Here's how to defeat Soldier of Godrick:

Edit2: Some helpful hints from the tutorial comments:

In order to get best results you should make sure to have some high damage or status spells to use as well. If you take a quick sidetrip to Caelid and take out Ekzykes you can get his spell. Should help you take out at least half of this absolute unit's health.

recommend farming at moghwyn's palace before attempting this boss to get up to lvl ~150 ish
Try summoning if you're stuck.
I really think you are being trolled, guys.
And fair enough, my only basis is that we already had this very bit a couple of times already, including the 'couple of hours' bit which takes the joke way over the top, but I still think this is a pretty obvious attempt at a clown farm.
I sincerely apologize in case this is actually real, but come on.
Like - Souls combat is laughed at as being bad, but then nobody can kill the tutorial boss that is basically handed too you... And the exit is prior to falling down the hole or after you kill Soldier of Godrick. Otherwise, have people literally never played a third-person action adventure or anything? Like - I feel like if you played Dragon Age Origins, the first mission after getting to Grey Wall is much harder than this tutorial dungeon. Or fighting a dragon in Skyrim/Guards in Oblivion/Cliffracers in Morrowind at least teaches you not to stand there and get hit by every attack.
I think what I find most funny about this though is, previously, nobody had a problem leaving the cave at all - the issue was most new folks blew past the tutorial; now they slightly adjusted a shaft of light or whatever, and new folks don't see the massive door that is one of the two things in the entire room to interact with and can only find the tutorial. Light is one hell of a navigation tool.

Thank you. Indeed, if I take the door to the left, I find a world to adventure in and work on building my character up. I don't know why the designers set up a near-at-hand "tutorial" guaranteed to clobber the player, or why some posters use it to discourage new players. In any case, while I'm not sure I'll enjoy the game in the long run anyway (I don't like the lack of save options), at least there's a chance. I've enjoyed one evening since since taking your advice anyway. :-) Thanks again.
