FLS's damage drops significantly the farthest it travels. It also isn’t able to target hitboxes when they are in mid-air, while also suffering from terrain configuration (meaning it can short out if the pathway can’t be mapped correctly).
Generally, I find ADLS, Granssax’s Spear and Lansseax’s Glaive the best lightning incantations you can find in Elden Ring.
The first for its potential damage, which almost redeems all the dragon cult incantations mishaps (like honed bolt not working properly while in dungeons with low ceiling).
Granssax’s Spear Ash of War is the improved version of the Lightning Spear in any possible way: better damage, better reach, comparable casting time, faster speed on projectile’s travel. If I want to snipe something, Granssax’s Spear is my go-to.
Lansseax’s Glaive has a more niche application, and it is something I learned to use in incantations’ combos: my use for it depends on the enemy. I can use it to bait an early dodge from an enemy, and punish it accordingly, OR I use it after an “Aspect of Crucible: Horns”: the time a humanoid needs to stand up again after being gored allows for the Glaive casting, ragdolling them further back. The combo can be further lengthen with “Aspect of the Crucible: Tail”, which creates more openings. It’s how I usually fight Malenia: Greyoll’s Roar (usually to interrupt the initial combo), Horns, Lansseax, Tail and maybe a Granssax Spear for good measure.
Granssax’s Spear - got to try this.
>damage scaled with dex
bruh. why fromsoft do this
Better yet, why the incantation with the best reach is an ash of war? Excluding elden star ofc, which is simply useless...
(While glinstone sorceries have 2 magical bows with homing projectiles, among other things?)
And ofc, the Spear of Gransax is a terrible weapon if you try to use it in melee: how terrible is it? So terrible, it can’t properly target stone imps’ hitboxes. XD
Really, I love the bolt of Gransax, but outside of a quick snipe, there are far superior weapons to be used.
I'll do you one better: despite the buff to dragon cult incantantions from the gravel stone seal, once you surpass a certain threshold with the pertaining STATs, frenzied flame seal achieves a better incant scaling than any other seal in game.
Despite madness incantations doing poor damage (if confronted with lightning or pure physical for example), their seal is better.
