Curious - Anyone with stuttering use Gsync or Freesync?
This is a long shot, but I am one of the ones who have a very powerful rig but have those constant freezing and stuttering issues (not just the cache ones but other random ones)

Recently on a whim I decided to turn off G-Sync (I have a Freesync / G-Sync compatible monitor, triple setup) and after that I played for about two hours, and did not have a single hiccup. Could be coincidence but curious if those with issues also use Freesync or G-sync and if that could some how be causing an issue?

Thoughts?

The game engine forces 60fps while also forcing VSync on. There seems to be some kind of disconnect between these two that can result in an additional layer of stuttering.

In versions prior to 1.04, I set VSync to "Fast" in the nVidia Control Panel. This method is similar to "Off" but only draws the specified number of frames to the screen, preventing screen tearing. If you don't have a FreeSync or GSync display, I'd recommend using this mode. This helped me remove some of the stutters I was experiencing prior to patch 1.04.

Yeah, I had the issue even with the unlock mods previously. Not using any mods now but for some reason decided to try to turn off Gsync. I just played a couple more hours and again, not a single stutter.

I do have a Gsync display, and have been using it, but it seems turning that off some how helped with the stutter (if not solved it completely)

Interesting to say the least..

I use G-Sync on both displays and have had no issues since launch. Then again, I've also tried it without G-sync and still had no issues since launch.

Also using G-sync with no issues. My stuttering also seems to have gone away since coming back after a few updates.

RTX 3070

CPU is Ryzen 9 3950X and a pretty capable NVME at over 6k read/write. This NVME, in this case, is a secondary and not on the primary OS drive.
Windows 10

Technically, I saw a very brief stutter at launch after leaving tutorial while fighting the Tree Sentinel in the rain (none before it rained, but after a few deaths it rained and occurred). The stutter vanished after probably quick 2 deaths or so and never saw any further stutter since. I've updated graphics drivers a few times as well. Also worth pointing out I dedicate a good portion of GPU, CPU, and other resources to virtual machines I run 24/7 even when gaming and even then haven't seen issues.

Resolution I've set it to is 1440p to help guarantee 60 FPS since iframes are likely tied to fps like past entries, but all settings maxed.

So weird. I have no issues with any other game only Elden Ring. Game runs solid 60 fps the stutters are something I have never seen before..it like "pauses" then unpauses but all the frames that should have been rendered then render real fast.

Maybe something specific with Gsync and my monitors..maybe the monitor rendering is stopping but the gpu is still sending the frames then the monitor plays catch up.

I have no clue..all I know is it seems to be gone now since I turned Gsync off. Lol.

I am done with Elden Ring anyway for the most part, but was still curious as to why this game had so many issues like this.

I also have the game on NVME and my OS drive is an SSD, and my steam drive is even a separate SSD - and I play max settings 1440p. On my rig the graphics settings make no difference..I get max framerate with any options..so it was never an issue of hardware not keeping up..something else..

Ah well. A lot of people are still getting the issue..that's why I was trying unconventional things (turning off Gsync)

Have you tried disabling the Microsoft device root association whatamacallit in device manager? I know it sounds insane, but this fix does indeed work. It fixes a long standing input polling stutter that's been around since DS3.

I think that was one of the first things I did. Also messing with disabling certain controller drivers and stuff since I use a Xbox One for PC controller which I know can behave weird.

I will double check the Root Association thing though.

Ah it was re-enabled. Gonna test that because it DOES feel like that is the type issue it is. Kind of like when your batteries int he controller die it can cause those weird stutters while it tries to figure out the input device. I know I tried this back when game first released but that was before they implemented other fixes..so I'll test that with Gsync back on.

Game runs great with the FPSUnlockpatch, obtainable from Github--Bing/Duck/Google it. Runs great. I play at 4k--no stuttering at all. 6900XT/3900X/Win11 22621.100/32GB system ram. With the patch, which also disables EasyAntiCheat or whatever it is, I get ~80 fps -120 fps, IIRC. I turn Freesync off because my 4k monitor is limited to Freesync 1. But even with Vsync enabled for 60 fps, or without vsync & using the patch at 60 fps, I don't stutter. I think the game is more fun with the FPS lock turned off, however--although, the difference is slight, but noticeable. Of course, this only applies to Offline mode, which is all I am interested in playing. Multiplayer will use different code and so could very well cause stutter, possibly--don't know, don't use it.

I was using the unlocker but still had the weird random stutters.

I just turned my Gsync back on and re-disabled the root enumerator..and didn't get any stutter. Will keep testing it over time and see if it persists but seems to be running now without a single stutter.

Your problem sounds like what I was experiencing. Keep an eye on your cpu usage when it stutters. Does cpu usage drop? Mine was dropping to ~1% and so I guessed it was a cpu issue with Elden Ring's optimization.

After some reading, I discovered some dx12 games have issues with hyper threading. Just the other day, I experimented a bit and found that (strangely enough!) disabling hyper threading on *half* of my cpu cores completely fixed it. This can be done in your BIOS settings, but... Why half?!

It'd be nice if this is patched so that I don't have to keep gimping my cpu. Anyway, I'm happy that I can play it at a solid 60fps now!

On this part, perhaps? I've definitely seen others resolve it like you have by disabling G-sync so it may very well something is going on worth at least some degree of investigation. It wouldn't help for the most common shader related cause but it could be one of possibly several various other sources further complicating the stutter issue.

The only other key standout I can think of is my NVME is much better than the average NVME PNY XLR8 CS3140 2TB (basic spec: 7,500MB/s seq. read and 6,850MB/s seq. write speeds) and SSD and lower tier 3k and lesser NVME are still by far the most common. I've honestly never given any attention to I/O usage, though, to be certain. I've also seen other people with Ryzen 5950X having issues (but then again the 5000s series appears to be a tad notorious for various issues tbh) and of course my RTX 3070 isn't bleeding edge, not to mention others with far lesser specs across the board, so it is certainly odd we see such inconsistency.

Before I upgraded to 5900X I had a 3900X with identical problems...so I don't think it's a 5000X issue.

Also I don't think it's a "good" vs "average" NVME either because the game shouldn't stutter even if was on a normal HDD... don't think games use that much data traffic even still.

I haven't had any issue yet, so I am going to keep monitoring.
