i of course finished Elden Ring twice before watching any of Vaati's videos (didn't want to be spoiled), but I came to the same conclusion on my own.
It's pretty apparent that Elden Ring has the best story and atmosphere of all From's titles. I know there's a small contigency of BB zealots, but when is anything accurately measured via fanaticism?
There are many things that can be used to leverage a good story, pacing, narrative, themes and so on, many of those are subjective. Specially for a From Software game which will always leave gaps for interpretations.
i think it's pretty safe to say that Vaati really does his research and puts the time and effort for their opinion to weigh a little heavier than that of an average player.
perhaps you believe that it's all just opinions, and you're correct, they're all just opinions, but honestly I think Vaati's is weightier.
This is seriously bordering on appeal to authority - except it's worse, you are going by a guy with sub count.
I've never watched a single video by Vaati and I have a grasp of the lore of each Fromsoftware game and had enough discussions with people who have similar understanding of the lore - I've never felt the need to watch Vaait or put weight into any YouTubers thoughts on the game anymore than the average person online.
i'm not boosting my opinion by using Vaati's credibility, that's called 'borrowed ethos.'
i'm not appealing to Vaati's authority to prove my point etiher.
what i'm doing is laying all opinions about Fromsoftware games alongside each other, and putting them on equal footing, and asking whether any opinions about the games stand out as being singular or better crafted than the others. Vaati's stands out to me as an opinion worth noticing, and compared to some others (just check the steam reviews) Vaati's is just on a higher level.
you may disagree, but then again, we're just talking about opinions here, right? one is just as good as the next, right?
You've played ER 8x and beaten Dark Souls 3 prior. At this point you've gained considerable experience with this type of game so it is only natural at this point you find these games easier.
Further, you probably played Elden Ring wrong initially making it appear harder than it is such as not enough Vigor blah blah which jaded your opinion but now I'm sure you stomp through it (I'd certainly hope 8 play-through later...).
You then equated completion length to a measure of difficulty. Elden Ring is a fairly substantial open world game. Sure, it isn't comparable in scale to Xenoblade Chronicles franchise or Zelda Breath of the Wild in terms of content/world size and playtime, but it is far larger than the linear and short Dark Souls 3. You're really surprised you finished DS3 that fast?
/facepalm
Now if we were to comment on a measure of which is better I can understand why some would find one game better than the other.
On Elden Ring's side you have sheer amount of content, even if it is bland copy repeat and unrefined. If they like it enough its okay for some. It does magic/incantations/dragon magic better. It offers better build variety.
On Dark Souls 3 side you get actual level design and not literally copy pasted tunnel square rooms for the 90th dungeon. You get varied bosses that are far more refined (tho some are still awful) and more interesting than much of Elden Rings, but its PvE trash mobs are copy pasta and even worse than Elden Rings. Dark Souls 3 is far more thematic where Elden Rings has moments of thematic strength but a really big bland and empty world with many set pieces that fall way to short thematically plus the awful copy pasta dungeons (made worse by actual decent legacy dungeons... showing just how bad their bland ones are).
Still, people are going to have their opinions but your thread... The logic lol
There are more things ins Elden Ring's combat, they don't amount to an overall improvement for myself.
For example Ashes fundamentally results in the design of bosses being more aggressive meaning the way you interact with the enemy is having them not be attacking you and attacking your ashes or vice versa while the other person not target does the damage. Sure it is possible to play differently to this, but that does seem to be part of the core of why the aggression was turned up.
Tracking is another major issue Elden Ring has with some bosses mid heavy attack doing a 180 to hit you, sure prior games had some tracking but Bloodborne was far more reasonable and didn't feel like random punishments.
Beyond that enemies hitting though your hits (you hit them but they keep swinging through it) is a larger issue in Elden Ring, sure for the large bosses doing a heavy attack this makes sense and feels fine but it extends to far more enemies then felt good, at least for myself.
I both enjoyed Elden Ring and was immensely disappointed by it, to me to increase the difficulty instead of fixing issues there combat system has had, they have leaned into those issues to create what felt like me a lot of artificial difficulty that was overall less satisfying to play.
