Why does Godfrey say "I've given thee courtesy enough" to us?
Why does Godfrey say that to us? I had the impression that he liked and respected us at the start of the battle since we are fellow Tarnished. So why does he sound so aggro all of a sudden?

What was the courtesy he was giving us in the first place?

He means courtesy in regards to holding back. He was fighting you with basically one arm tied behind his back, and so he's acknowledging that the real fight begins now. In his primal warrior state, he is filled with rage and bloodlust.

EDIT: In other words, his courtesy is not immediately destroying you with his full power.

Damn son. Not sure why he didn't let his lion help him tho, his lion was clearly shifting from ghost to physical phase, if they had duoed we would have died multiple times. He would have won.

It means "I've been nice long enough."

Godfrey is a proud warrior, and sees Sarosh as mainly a guardian of his emotional state. Sarosh is basically a set of leg weights to him; something to discard when it's time to take the fight serious.

He's also an arrogant lord, much like the rest of the Shardbearers. He's the OG Tarnished.

The lion was to keep his bloodlust in check. It was there to hinder him, not help. All shadows are given to all the Empyreans to control them, like Blaidd, even though he's a servant, is there to kill Ranni if she betrayed the Fingers.

Perhaps. I still think we would have a tougher time fighting a lion AND first phase Godfrey. Imagine how BS that fight would have been.

Actually thank goodness Godfrey killed his lion.

Serosh wasnt a shadowbound beast, he was kinda its own thing.

And Godfrey wansnt Empyrean.

So far, everything hints that all Shadowbound Beasts are Wolf-Like in nature, as seen with Blaidd, Maliketh and Baleful Shadow, but it does appear that how bestial or humanoid can vary, since Blaidd was mostly humanoid besides his head, while Maliketh was almost completely beast-like besides his arms which were more humanoid.

It's just the usual "This isn't even my full power" trope. The words may change, but the concept is the same.

Agreed, this makes more sense. Serosh was called a beast regent too.

Mechanically it could have been an interesting fight; like an Artorias and Sif duo from Dark Souls. Thematically though, I think what they did is a much better fit. You see that giant painting of Godfrey in Stormveil, and you keep hearing these stories of the Lion Warrior, who even inspires Radahn. Then to have him tear Serosh open like a can of tuna, and claim he's done playing nice is such a shocking moment that makes you go 'what the actual hell have I gotten myself into!?'.

EDIT: Rewatching the cutscene, it's also clear that Godfrey intends to become Elden Lord again and seek audience with the Greater Will. He seems to deem you as no threat, and the first phase of the fight is merely a formality.

'I've given thee courtesy enough' is very clearly him saying 'I've let this joke of a fight continue for too long. I have a lordship to claim, and now you're getting on my nerves'.

Nah it would be a bad fight. Godfrey is TOO aggressive to fight both at once.

The thing about Godfrey is that he's a considerate Lord. He cares about his people. He's the kind guy who picks up the bill when you go to dinner with him. Problem is you never even offer to pay. I mean it's been like, what, 20 times you guys had dinner together, and you've never once even offered? ♥♥♥♥♥♥' A man! And now you're bustin' in on him when he's just having a moment with his son. Enough is enough, you filthy tarnished pig!

Welp, I can imagine he was prolly blocking the door way to the bar carriage on a night train after we all had nice meals in the dinner carriage - it's rude to stand in the way to after dinner drinks ;P

I kind of wish there was even a single line of Godfrey recognizing our Tarnished. After all, they were supposed to all go fight together, with Godfrey. Would have been nice to have an "Oh, it's you," moment. It would have made him holding back at first make more sense, we were once comrades in arms.

Then at the start of the 2nd phase, he could say something like "you've grown much stronger since last we met," before he goes beast mode.

A couple simple lines. Put together they would have made the battle much more personal, which is something I think was sorely missing from the fight. As it is, he is just an obstacle in our path... he could have been someone we once celebrated victories with.
