You can; the weapon just needs to have native infusions on it, such as bleed, poison, madness, or sleep. Adding occult infusion raises their buildup relative to arcane, though at a lower rate than if infused with the direct affinity if that makes sense.

well i guess i should be more clear than that i think you should be able to buff the weapon with spells like lightning armament or bloodflame blade. basically my thinking is that the way the occult infusion works is basically the same as heavy and keen infusions but with the annoying and weird caveot that it doesnt let you buff the weapon which honestly kinda sucks and makes bloodflame blade useless cause either you decide to scale with some other stat like dex or str and loose out on arc, mind, or vig or you give up arcane scaling to keep all those stats high enough that a keen or heavy infuse is a choice.

I think the way they've implemented it is more an issue of balance. For all intents and purposes, Occult scaling is basically a best-of-both-worlds affinity that allows both physical damage boost and status build up boost. Allowing it to be further buffed would place it in a category above most, if not all weapons. It's the same reason you can't buff elemental infusion weapons; it would be more powerful than any other combination.

Bloodflame Blade in particular scales of your incantation scaling, and not Arcane, meaning that is is a spell designed to add bleed options to Faith builds.
Occult is already good no need for it to be OP

hmm i guess that is a fair take but still i think it would be more interesting it if actually lowered the rating of any status effect buildups to balance it on top of weapons with it being buffable. that way it kinda feels like keen and heavy infusions but with the benefit of scaling through arcane letting you still have high arcane.
Yea but the reason it is the way it is now is that it boosts native arcane scaling status effects on weapons as well as providing physical damage scaling with arcane, making those weapons very powerful. A pure arcane build using a katana with occult infusion will always do more damage than a katana on a pure arcane build using bleed infusion because the difference in bleed build-up is negligible while the physical damage on the occult is much higher. This is much more noticeable when using Ashes of war like seppuku on a occult katana vs a bleed katana.
