its inconsistent when you do it from the front, i only crit around 20% of the time when i try it from the front, thats why i run around them, in that case its basically 100%.
i have no idea what causes the inconsistency, my bet is that it depends on the angle to some degree.
I swear, it always comes back to size for some dudes.

Works fine for me. Keep in mind that the window for a critical hit is quite small.
You have to move really close to them, that's why. If you keep attacking after a guard break with a weapon that has longer range it won't do it. It's consistent.
It's like a backstab but from the front.
Even if you're right up in that dudes face giving him the deepest kiss ever, if you're mashing the ♥♥♥♥ out of the attack button when you guard break you'll just keep beating them, and a single hit from any weapon will cancel any chance for a riposte. So don't button mash if you want crits.
you guys are correct, the distance was the issue.
after hugging them, i can commence penetration, with my thrusting sword.
Also, while I don't have the same issue as you from shield-break ripostes, I do when it comes to stance-breaks on bosses. Not sure what that is. Sometimes it just doesn't work for me. And then sometimes it works when it shouldn't.
I love when positive results actually come from these discussions! This might also make the seemingly useless "Kick" Ash of War seem a little better if you're a low-FP character.
It's pretty simple. You record a video (I use OBS Studio for this), cut out the moment you need from the video and save it in GIF format with any program convenient for you (I use Movavi Video Editor Plus), watch the size of the resulting file, because Steam does not allow you to upload files larger than 8 mb in your illustrations.
