That.
Finally, Unreal Engine is overrated anyway, and thinking that Fromsoft would magically make better games because of it is kinda silly.
So no.
Change the engine, yeah sure why not. Upgrade it if possible, or make a new but similar one.
Completely transporting games to an engine they obviously have no experience with?
How is that supposed to even work or not end in failure.
Unreal Engine is highly flexible and can be adapted to pretty much any gameplay type while providing a good base for basic functionality. However, adapting it to function with a melee combat centric system would require a significant amount of time. I think the reason FromSoft has been using the old engine (DS2 not withstanding) is because it already does everything they need it to do and they don't want to invest more time in a new engine if they can help it.
Personally, while I agree that they need to either make significant improvements to their engine or use a better one, even "foolproof" engines like UE can be screwed up by incompetent enough devs. Square-Enix released an RPG on UE3 for XBox 360 (later ported to PC) that had bad performance and very bland environments despite the UE tools being very good at allowing devs to create custom environments. Still, SE proved that they are indeed extremely incompetent outside of pretty FMVs.
Edit: The SE game in question was "Last Remnant" iirc.
Fromsofts engine is also pretty overrated in my mind.
People always act as if Elden Ring would be a graphical masterpiece. In reality your character doesnt even have a shadow inside of dungeons and most of the textures are pretty low res.
After switching to Unreal they would at least be able to make games with:
- working netcode
- unlimited framerate
- uninterrupted coop
- dlss and raytracing support
- dynamic shadows inside of buildings
- volumetric lighting
- levelstreaming with high resolution textures and without texture and object pop ins
What people to love, though, is the artstyle. The graphics are good. Beautiful, but nothing groundbreaking or anything like that. The artstyle though? Fantastic.
The way everything looks, the attention to detail. That's why people say it "looks" amazing. Not the graphics itself.
How about changing your main language to chinese, that way your brilliant thoughts can reach more people?!
I have seen a lot of people claiming that Elden Ring is a graphical masterpiece.
Especially, but not only, on the Elden Ring Subreddit:
- people claiming that ER looks better than the Demons Souls remake, not only from an artdesign standpoint, but also graphicaly.
- a lot of people claiming the graphics of ER look just as good as in games like RDR 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, ....
There is just simply no limit to the delusion of superfans.
I do agree tho that Fromsoft has always a very good art design in their games.
This is actually a good example. Demon's Souls Remake runs on Bluepoint - a different engine - and people say it plays exactly like a Fromsoft-Engine game.
1. Art design
2. Graphical capability
Art design being "good" or "bad" is purely subjective.
Graphical capabilities can be viewed objectively. i.e. x game engine supports these graphical techniques and effects whereas y engine does not. Graphical capability can also be viewed subjectively. i.e. x graphical technique looks inferior in y game vs. z game.
Not to speak of all the other new modern features like cross-platform or mobile compatibility.
Will Fromsoft be able to keep up at all if modern engines keep progressing at this rate?
graphic doesnt matter at all once it has its standard tbh that being gen 7+ I could care less if this looks like DS1 or the new uncharted I really don´t care I was even okay with OoT runnign on 20fps and looking polygony as heck so aynthign that is gen7+ looking is totally fine
you see the differences less and less anyways, compare a 10 polygon cube and a 14 polygon cube now compare a 100K polygon cube and a 300K polygon cube you hardly see a difference in the latter.
technical issues? I really don´t know much, there was stutter in the beginnign but that was fixed once I played enough, there was some graphical problems in caves and with boss doors but thats completely fixed by now.
this game was very good optimized in the bigger scope adn especially good optimized in comparison to other games and especially AAA games *cough* Dying light 2 *cough*.
To add on this my pc is way over 8 years old and Im runnign msotly 60+FPS on an old i5 that barely reaches recommended for this game.
clunky controls I really can´t agree to either it feels smother then any of the other souls games albeit I think that some people might have issues with the controls but they are intended to be like that like action queuing for example when you mash buttons you can get killed for that as you queue up certain actions. If we count some collison to controls yea I see that sliding off certain terrains flying int eh air getting super speed when landing on enemies being able to hit through walls
netcode is really bad tho I give you that and it has been bad since ever basically
If that could happen it would've happened already. For that to happen art needs to die completely, bc there's always at least some appreciation for art.
Not even, unfortunately.
As explained by others, Square Enix and other studio can still release sh//it product with issues in that list. Take a look at PUBG lol.
The 1st reasons big studio choose UE is because it's easier to increase the man power in poor countries. If you want more devs to work on your games and spend the less amount of money, then UE is your saving grace.
Having your own engine mean that not only you can't let everybody anywhere to touch it without strict NDA, you also need to train them to learn how using it, which not only take time, but also cost more money than taking any random intern from third world country that obliviously leaned UE at school and can work right away.
