Am I stupid or do faith builds suck?
I made a thread a few days asking if it was fun, since I wanted to do a faith build for my final achievement run, and the response was about 50/50 between it being unfun vs fun, playing it now, and I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong, because the build feels beyond weak rn at least. I rushed Flame of Frenzy for my attack spell, and that does decent damage, sometimes. My spell slots are Heal, Flame of Frenzy, and Flame Sling. I use a lordsworn straightsword with holy infusion. This is the first time I've struggled with Margit, who guards the Godskin Tome I need for black fire. Both my melee builds easily steamrolled the first boss, while even after grinding more than usual my faith build struggles. Am I missing a vital part of how to do this kind of build, or are there just kinda bad?

I think your problem is not related to incantations. As you said I think the problems are vital and physical parts. At the early stage, incantations are bad and not support you strongly, especially on boss stage. I recommend to take beast/fire slings but other weapon arts could work better at the early games. At least, 30 faith is needed, I think, to use incantation as a primary tools for fights with specific gear for your specialization.

I mean if you use incantations with holy damage, then they aren't that great, but if we talk about flame and any other damage, it's good.
I've read the OP's thread a few days ago, linked my guide and everything he mentions is mentioned in the guide as well.

The thing about fire being underwhelming. The thing about getting going at around lvl 100. The thing about a limited number of spells being usable. The thing about needing melee weapons to carry you through the early game.

I'll just post it again, but honestly it feels lost on the OP as he obviously didn't read or skim through it a few days ago, so he won't read or skim through it now. And also because he judges a specialised build while the build doesn't have access to its most important ressources.

Out of curiosity has anyone found/no of a faith weapon that deals just physical damage (know holy).

I’ve found a few that scales fire but was kinda hoping for a nice generic weapon to get me through the endgame stuff.

Hey, so to start I would like to say that I did read it through the first time, and I appreciate you linking it because it was useful! however this post is made especially regarding the early game, in which I only have immediate access to maybe two of these talisman and half the items. I'll admit the phrasing of the topic is highly combative and could probably be worded better, but I also think that its fair to say that a good build needs to be viable from beginning to end, not be a great wall in the beginning to have a good time hopefully by the end.

That said, now that I have gotten lightning spear and honed bolt thanks to the advice on how to do so early, thanks to others, the game has finally gotten going for me, as I finally have a spell that both does damage, and doesn't require me to kiss my enemy's cheek. Though this magic seems super weak against undead and stone imps, they aren't that hard to deal with in general. So thanks again everyone for the advice.

It seems that the Erdsteel Daggers (One from Kenneth Haight, the other in Leyndell) have Faith Scaling, but no special damage type, so a physical faith weapon seems to be that.
If you struggle with Margit on Faith i doubt you know the moveset of the boss

That flame incantation that is a starter spell for that 1 class does ~ 220 damage a hit and you can get in 3 hits pretty consistently with it for ~ 660 damage

Fighting Margit with incantation is same as melee but you do more damage >-<

Katana does ~ 105 damage per r1
flame dies ~ 220 damage per r1

positioning and attack timing and all is completely the same.

only downside is you have no bleed proccs and no stagger.
but the extra damage makes up more than enough for it.

so what exactly were you struggling with ?

btw i tried Faith infused weapons for Margit and its much better to just go straight faith spell vs him.
faith infusion sucks so much early game.... it lasts for 30 seconds and without it the damage is scaled down insanely....

DEX/STR/quality hybrid builds are really strong. I use a RL125 quality faith build with the Blasphemous blade and the AR easly exceeds the 1000s with buffs.

This is my current fav build beacause all the weapon variety and spells you have access to.

This is honestly the issue, you kinda mentioned it. At the time I had flame of frenzy, which I got animation knocked out of every time. I had catch flame and kept missing since that spell requires me to be closer than I ever think I am. Oh! And also, I was using a holy infused straight sword that tickled them a bit. And I was refusing to use summons at the time so I couldn't get any smart slaps in.

But, now I have lightning spear and honed bolt, which not only do damage but I am hitting them regularly. And I started using summons, which tbh made the fight infinitely easier. I'll probably need them a lot until I adjust

i run a pure faith assassin build here. My bests friends are overall catch flame and darkness.
Darkness is probably one if not my favorite incantation in the game.

but it doesn't matter if you are early, mid or late game. Your best damaging spells are early games

Catch flame (close burst dmg that you can combo into both melee and other spell )

Honed bolt ( a good range spell, but the best thing about that is it's combo potential with catch flame )

Lightning spear best early long range you can get, tool used mostly to pull aggro but still does decent dmg ( you can one shot a lot of things early on )
Envoy's long horn bubbles scale with faith, so does taker's flame from blasphemous blade, those 2 alone make faith as main stat pretty neato.
u dont need summons.

catch flame is really good for Margit. (thats the spell i meant)
i can do a video later and show

but yeha holy infusion is completely lame in early game.....
it basically reducses your weapon damage by a lot to have a chance to boost it for 30 seconds.

but when you boost midfight you get attacked.
and in 30 seconds you dont get any damage off its wasted.....

its really really bad since most of the time you do less damage than without infusion
Keep in mind that scaling in the early game is basically non-existent. You have to have a lot of investment to get damage out of scaling. It's not really worth infusing with sacred to start, unless you like hitting with holy noodles, or you're up against a specific type of enemy that's weak to holy (such as Death Birds).

Lightning Spear and Black Flame are easily among the best incantations you'll find. Flame of Frenzy is an honorable mention for its AoE utility, but even this spell is situational.

Black Flame Ritual, Black Flame Blade, Ezyki-whatever Breath (dragon rot), the Frenzy insta-beam, are just a few of the later incantations that are also situational but quite good.

Like said above, you want to be taking advantage of the utility this school of magic provides. Golden Vow, Blessing, Heal, all of the damage resistance spells, Flame Cleanse Me, etc etc.

Also, there are a lot of good faith weapons, and you'll find them all over the place - some incredibly early game, such as the Winged Scythe.

anyone that says pure faith sucks is just bad
Lightning spear, Catch Flame, Pest Threads. Those 3 are the best to start with. You can get them all without fighting. Just ride to Lake and Caelid.

both are late game, not something op can reach
