How far into the game does the prisoner have to go before removing the mask, that is if they can I mean, and if not why not? (new player here btw)

You can swap and remove equipment as often as you like.

Ofc if you are referring to a 'lore wise' kind of thing, then i guess your character would ask the blacksmith in rountable hold to remove it, or just sit down when you first get out of that hole in the ground and put some grease up in there and slip out or something.

for real it would have been amazing quest design if the prisoner in particular COULDN'T take the mask off before a certai point. that would be so cool
