Noob-Question : When using sword and shield, can't I use sword's ash of war instead ?
Hi all,

as title says. I found a few interesting ash of wars for my weapons, but I play in sword and shield style, and when I have my shield equipped, i can't use the sword special attack.

I know it works when I two hand my weapon, but I need the shield because I suck in combat :) Is there a setting to change it, or is it a feature i must accept ?

Thanks in advance for the info

You have to remove the ash of war from the shield first.

there is a ash of war that removes a weapon or shields ability, put that on your shield to remove parry, then you can use the swords AoW

Or just two hand the sword -> use ash of war -> 1hand the sword again.

You can either buy the ash of war called "no skill" to equip on your current shield, or choose a shield that does not carry any ash of war.

The weapon in your left hand take priority. If you want to have a weapon in each hand and you want to use the skill from the one in your right (without two-handing or switching weapons), you need to put the "No Skill" ash of war on your left hand weapon (or just have that weapon come with the "No Skill" skill by default).

You can buy the ash for 600 runes from the NPC at warmaster's shack, which you get to by taking a right onto a path while travailing up stormhill (you should be able to see a forested crossroad on your map, that's your target.)

Switching Hands did not work, still the shield takes priority.

I need to add : I use the Turtle Shield, it seems to have an ability that is not even listed in the ash of war menu. It comes "included", i think it's barricade. I can add one to the shield though, which overrides the default . I try with the "no skill" ash of war next

Not switching, two handing. Hold A and press RB on a controller.

I know, i was referring to the post above that left hand has priority. I know about two-handling, but I want to use sword and shield for blocking.

In Limgrave there is a man in a shack who sells Ashes of War. Buy the 'No Skill' one, and place it on your shield at a site of grace.

You can also switch to 2h when using the ash, and then switching back to go back to using your shield.

Possible. Keyboard / mouse is a bit sluggisch and sometimes even unresponsive, but worth a try too.

No skill works nice, thanks for that tipp :)

careful with that turtle shield, it doesn't block 100% physical damage so you still get hit a bit even when you block. It'll be no biggie most of the time, but sometimes you can die because of it. The extra stamina regen speed you get from using it is my opinion not worth giving up a 100% physical resist shield for. It can be tricky to test out stamina usage in this game because we get unlimited stamina out of combat, but aggro a weak enemy and use up your stamina, take note of how fast it refils, then switch to a different shield and do the same. See if you feel it's worth it for the shield. Also it's heavier than some of the 100% phys resist shields.

Yup, it has some bleed through, still better than the other shields I found (though the Brass shield gave me that awesome sword slash). I also use the turtle amulet, so stamina is fine ;)
