Both games are like a duality of fromsoft's format.
Linear vs. open world
Set character and weapon vs. Make your own and pick your own playstyle.
Sekiro is easily my fave out of the series. Though Elden Ring is good for other reasons then why sekiro is good.
Feels more like they just wanted his name but not actually write anything.
Two main reasons: Extensive marketing / hype campaign, and Dark Souls fanboys. Sekiro wasn't as popular because it deviated from the DS formula and not as many people were interested in the Japanese setting. This was more popular precisely because it feels like Dark Souls 3.5, imo.
Compare it to other "Hype" games, like Farcry 6 or Lost Ark or nearly any other AAA game.
They were hyped alot, yet they failed to deliver.
Elden Ring makes the Open World an acutally world where you get rewarded for actions you do. Unlike other games where there are collectibles all over the world that are there just to give the player something to do.
Its a fanservice game for us "Fanboys", made just with us in mind. Yet the majority of the so called "casuals" enjoyed the game too.
Although, the game itself got stellar reviews, the overwhelmingly positive reception drowned out legitimate criticism (about the pve-side, pvp is always toxic so no change there)
Now, critiques like joseph anderson painted a more realistic picture, expressing high praise but also pointing out its flaws which turns the game from a masterpiece (10/10) to a great game (8/10), a much better and realistic outlook on the game.
Too much positivity can also be negativ.
