Elden Ring is NOT a new IP, it's just Dark Souls 4...

First of all, don't get the wrong idea... I loved Elden Ring (despite the problems with balancing and broken PvP builds), but I don't think it adds enough to the traditional Souls formula to justify a separate new IP.

Elden Ring was supposed to be a new IP from the developers of the Souls games, but in reality it's just another Dark Souls game in a bare-bones 'open' world.
A sequel in a long-running series having a different name doesn't make it a new IP.

• The lore is almost identical to previous Souls games, the only difference is slightly more narrative.
  
• The combat is exactly the same, only far less balanced than previous games. In fact, it's so unbalanced with broken builds that I completely gave up on PvP, which is a huge step backwards from Dark Souls 3 PvP..
  
• The leveling system is exactly the same, the only difference is souls are now called runes...
  
• The only new additions are useless spirits that can only be summoned in a few areas, a simple horse with frustrating controls, a generic map with barely any detail, a rushed crafting mechanic that becomes a boring grind and lacks the level of depth and complexity achieved by older RPGs decades ago, and a few tiny things that aren't even worth mentioning.

This is not a new IP... this is just Dark Souls 4 with another name that makes sense from a marketing point of view to attract new players, which certainly worked.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, I love the Souls games. I just wanted to clear any misconceptions about Elden Ring being a new IP, because anyone who has played a Souls game would know it's obviously not.

If the name were "Dark Souls 4" people would grumble and hate it even more. Precisely for the "small changes". That's what happened with Dark Souls II. In addition, changing the name and franchise is a good strategy to attract more audience, especially for the open world appeal. However, it can be said that Elden Ring is "Dark Souls II: 2"

You might as well say that Dark Stalkers is not a separate IP from Street Fighter and is actually Street Fighter 3 and that X-Men: Children of the Atom is Street Fighter 4.

Similarity in gameplay is inconsequential. Intellectual Property is solely a rights wrangling issue.

Pretty sure the idea of this game being called Elden Ring instead of Dark Souls 4. Is so FS can start from a blank slate of ideas and world building. Would you prefer if every title made by them was a subsequent sequel to Dark Souls? That continue to repeat the cycle?

Of course the game is going to be similar. FS literally birthed the Souls-Like genre. This is their style.. Obviously with Sekiro and Bloodborne those titles were “different,” but it was .. obviously.. a different take on the forumla entirely.

Edit: As for reusing assets; From has reused assets since Demon Souls.

I agree honestly, with the small amount of hours I've played before ER killed my GPU it did really seem like that. There's no hate nor remorse to it though, it was actually fun to see how Dark Souls could work as an open world.

I believe when FROM said DS3 was the last Dark Souls game they kind of shot themselves in the foot, and needed to mask Dark Souls 4 with a new coat of paint.

Objectively one of the better open worlds out there = "Bare bones", I see. And as far as new IP goes I guess you don't give many ♥♥♥♥♥ about lore of worldbuilding then bc that's what was ended with DS3. And it's all new going forward. you seem to be confusing IP and genre and gameplay.

The voice audio of the tarnish when he falls to his death is the same as dark souls 3. They seriously need to change that and need to add back the armor sound too. Plus they should of added more npc questlines since its open world.

I agree 100% because I was thinking the exact same thing playing. The game is ok but it is not my fav souls game, that would have to be DS3. One thing that really disappoints me is the NG+ system for ER, there is no reason to go to NG+ because there is nothing new to do or get. I would not give ER a 10 out of 10, maybe an 8 at best.
