Elden Ring is NOT a new IP, it's just Dark Souls 4...
First of all, don't get the wrong idea... I loved Elden Ring (despite the problems with balancing and broken PvP builds), but I don't think it adds enough to the traditional Souls formula to justify a separate new IP.

Elden Ring was supposed to be a new IP from the developers of the Souls games, but in reality it's just another Dark Souls game in a bare-bones 'open' world.
A sequel in a long-running series having a different name doesn't make it a new IP.
  • The lore is almost identical to previous Souls games, the only difference is slightly more narrative.
  • The combat is exactly the same, only far less balanced than previous games. In fact, it's so unbalanced with broken builds that I completely gave up on PvP, which is a huge step backwards from Dark Souls 3 PvP..
  • The leveling system is exactly the same, the only difference is souls are now called runes...
  • The only new additions are useless spirits that can only be summoned in a few areas, a simple horse with frustrating controls, a generic map with barely any detail, a rushed crafting mechanic that becomes a boring grind and lacks the level of depth and complexity achieved by older RPGs decades ago, and a few tiny things that aren't even worth mentioning.

This is not a new IP... this is just Dark Souls 4 with another name that makes sense from a marketing point of view to attract new players, which certainly worked.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, I love the Souls games. I just wanted to clear any misconceptions about Elden Ring being a new IP, because anyone who has played a Souls game would know it's obviously not.

Eh, op has a point though. We can start calling a spade a rake, but it's still a spade.

I've played through the dark souls trilogy and bloodborne. Elden Ring is more different from DS1-3 than Bloodborne. It's not DS4.

when you say "generic map with barely any detail" I hope you're talking about the map you put waypoints on and stuff and not the beautiful open world.

totally agree, just dark souls in another skin with open world(loved this, especially the horse), my guess its in a new skin to lure in people that were afraid to buy a souls game

The world map may look visually appealing but lacks any level of detail.
Painting a beautiful map doesn't make it more useful.
Skyrim had a spectacularly detailed 3D world map that puts Elden Ring's map to shame, and that was 11 years ago...

I would say it is half Skyrim/Witcher3 and half DS. ER has lowest amount of online features than any DS game (no vagrants, no covenants, no cross-player environment features, e.g. bell signal, etc).

Did you not read my post? Changing the name of a sequel to a long-running series is not enough to justify a completely new IP.

Gonna have to beg to differ with you there. Big time. Skyrim's world looks like child's play compared to Elden Ring's. At least from an aesthetic standpoint. Shadow of the Colossus' world map is better than Skyrim's and that game came out like 20 years ago and runs on PS2 hardware.

I mean, if you're one of those more = better type of people then yeah you might prefer Skyrim's world because it has a couple hundred dungeons to explore and NPCs all over the place.

Sounds more like you are mixing up fromsoft formula with dark souls.

This is Kings Feild 14 by your logic.

While most of the mechanics feel like ds3, we can then look at how different ds2 and ds3 feel and play.

Just look at the magic. In dark souls pyro is int+faith. In Elden ring it's more about Holy spells .

Elemental are the basic faith spells and higher up are the Holy spells.

The games are split by lore and lore based mechanism. All fromsoft games share the same vibe.

I'm talking about the actual map that you use to navigate around the world, then map you pull out to fast-travel with sights of grace... not the world itself.

Elden Ring's open world may be shallow and bare-bones compared to other open-world RPGs, but it's stunningly beautiful with scenery that's second to none.

The navigation map, on the other hand, is practically useless for much else than a simple sense of direction.

yeah youre simply wicked wrong OP. Lmao look at the stories of dark souls, bloodborne, sekiro, elden ring. Same tropes all over the place. Same stuff. its the same company lol. You know how many theories there are about all games occurring in the same universe? Thats because particular design themes and motfis are present in all the games because....the same people made them!!

Oh, ok well that makes sense. Weird complaint though. Don't most open world games have a 2d map? It never even crossed my mind that this might be a problem. Some people might even call it "immersive" as the map looks like something drawn on paper.

Think of it this way: If Elden Ring was named Dark Souls 4, would that change anything?
Not in the slightest. It would play and feel exactly as you'd expect a Dark Souls game to play and feel like. Therefore, Elden Ring is NOT a new IP. It's another Dark Souls game with a new name. Nothing more, nothing less.

I would argue the spirits are far from useless. Try summoning a +10 Black Knife Tiche in a boss fight and see how "useless" it is.

But I do agree some of the balancing is pretty problematic.
