Painting a beautiful map doesn't make it more useful.
Skyrim had a spectacularly detailed 3D world map that puts Elden Ring's map to shame, and that was 11 years ago...
Did you not read my post? Changing the name of a sequel to a long-running series is not enough to justify a completely new IP.
Eh, op has a point though. We can start calling a spade a rake, but it's still a spade.
Gonna have to beg to differ with you there. Big time. Skyrim's world looks like child's play compared to Elden Ring's. At least from an aesthetic standpoint. Shadow of the Colossus' world map is better than Skyrim's and that game came out like 20 years ago and runs on PS2 hardware.
I mean, if you're one of those more = better type of people then yeah you might prefer Skyrim's world because it has a couple hundred dungeons to explore and NPCs all over the place.
This is Kings Feild 14 by your logic.
While most of the mechanics feel like ds3, we can then look at how different ds2 and ds3 feel and play.
Just look at the magic. In dark souls pyro is int+faith. In Elden ring it's more about Holy spells .
Elemental are the basic faith spells and higher up are the Holy spells.
The games are split by lore and lore based mechanism. All fromsoft games share the same vibe.
Elden Ring's open world may be shallow and bare-bones compared to other open-world RPGs, but it's stunningly beautiful with scenery that's second to none.
The navigation map, on the other hand, is practically useless for much else than a simple sense of direction.
Oh, ok well that makes sense. Weird complaint though. Don't most open world games have a 2d map? It never even crossed my mind that this might be a problem. Some people might even call it "immersive" as the map looks like something drawn on paper.
Not in the slightest. It would play and feel exactly as you'd expect a Dark Souls game to play and feel like. Therefore, Elden Ring is NOT a new IP. It's another Dark Souls game with a new name. Nothing more, nothing less.
I would argue the spirits are far from useless. Try summoning a +10 Black Knife Tiche in a boss fight and see how "useless" it is.
But I do agree some of the balancing is pretty problematic.
