First thing, go grab the flail weapon near that fort down in Weeping peninsula. Then head up to dragonbarrow and use it to kill the big ol' undead dragon for a veritable bounty of runes worth around 20 levels or something. Even more if you first head to the beach near the starting area and grab that gold fowl foot to increase the runes you get from cheesing the dragon. Now you're set with whatever playstyle you want to run with.
