This boss was rather easy with the spear they gave to us, the range of this thing for the fight is insane, you can be really far from him and still hit him wtih heavy attacks or jump attacks, no need to upgrade it, it's powerfull enough, but if you want to speed up the fight, feel free to upgrae the great spear
I think you must have missed the wind blades when you attack with it, you don't have to land a hit with the physical part of the weapon, only with the wind blades
That fight is completely busted.
He's literally a gimmick boss - the only "cheese" is using the weapon given to you for the fight.
I died to him about 20 times, barely getting him into his second phase maybe 4 or 5 times - at which point he has an insane amount of health and keeps backing off so you can't melee him when he has a staggering lava pool.
Then I realized you're supposed to use the sword they give you, went and quickly upgraded it, and beat him in one try.
It really was sad honestly how easy it was to beat him with it. Because I thought his fight was a spectacle on par with fighting general Radahn - if not cooler - yet the game specifically makes it nearly impossible to win without using a gimmick weapon that trivializes it. I wish they didn't have the pool of staggering lava around him - that alone would have made me want to fight him "normally" until the end.
If you have the equipment/levels, I think there's 2 ways to make it lot easier. You can either spam the weapon art (which spam staggers him, someone described how to do it above but you just spam the first hit basically), or you can hide behind a shield and spam poke attacks (that kind of annihilates a lot of bosses tbh, with rykard the shield poke does a surprising amount of damage and stagger per stamina cost).
You shouldn't be having range problems though. The spear gives you enough range to stand well out of the lava. Pay attention to walls though and run around to the other side if you're close to getting cornered.
JOIN THE SERPENT KING AS FAMILEEEEEE
What do you mean who doesnt love terrible camera angles and 50% of the attacks you can't see because he's that big so you just have to go by the noises lol
