Boss spoilers, is Rykard supposed to be the most unfun boss in all of dark souls?
Is there cheese to this fight? The sword they give you does almost no damage, you have to be basically standing in the lava to even be close enough to hit him, his body takes up 85% of the area. Like, this has to be the worst designed boss I've ever seen in a dark souls game.

it was really bad the spear should have never been a thing once you get the timing right you can just stun lock him you dont need to upgrade it at all . Look online when his left hand ( ur right side ) drops to the ground charge that big beam attack and he will be stun blocked.

This boss was rather easy with the spear they gave to us, the range of this thing for the fight is insane, you can be really far from him and still hit him wtih heavy attacks or jump attacks, no need to upgrade it, it's powerfull enough, but if you want to speed up the fight, feel free to upgrae the great spear
I think you must have missed the wind blades when you attack with it, you don't have to land a hit with the physical part of the weapon, only with the wind blades

I didn't even upgrade the sword and still beat him...It's really about allocating your flask to Mana and spamming the weapon art.
Zanaki 23 ABR 2022 a las 17:05
Upgraded the sword to 6ish. beat him in 30 seconds.... that was a weirdly made fight.
Gearwar 23 ABR 2022 a las 17:16
lol unless they changed it with a patch: You can literally use l2 once (Not the follow up attack, just the initial L2) which then stunlocks him and if you wait maybe less than half a second before launching the next l2 (again just the initial one, not the follow up) you can stunlock him the whole 2 phases. Srsly, when I beat him with that spear, i do not think he got of 3 attacks in both phases.

That fight is completely busted.

He's literally a gimmick boss - the only "cheese" is using the weapon given to you for the fight.

I died to him about 20 times, barely getting him into his second phase maybe 4 or 5 times - at which point he has an insane amount of health and keeps backing off so you can't melee him when he has a staggering lava pool.

Then I realized you're supposed to use the sword they give you, went and quickly upgraded it, and beat him in one try.

It really was sad honestly how easy it was to beat him with it. Because I thought his fight was a spectacle on par with fighting general Radahn - if not cooler - yet the game specifically makes it nearly impossible to win without using a gimmick weapon that trivializes it. I wish they didn't have the pool of staggering lava around him - that alone would have made me want to fight him "normally" until the end.

isn't the weapon literally called the "Serpent Slayer" or something like that? it's kinda hard to miss that it's probably got some special function against the boss, and it doesn't require running past the boss and doing some combat-menuing to equip either, which is a change from De'S and DS3

yeah, the lava sucks. without it the fight would be similar to Yhorm from DS3 (I probably misspelled the name, but you know who I mean~) where the weapon trivialises the fight, but it's 100% doable without it, just a bit more challenging than most bosses at that point

I think it's supposed to be like bed of chaos or something... like it seems really hard until you have an epiphany and use the spear to easily kill him, but I think most people either talked to the ghost in volcano manor or just realized to use the spear right away and the whole thing kind of falls flat.

Without any modifications to your build, jump attack spam him. Jump attack is pretty decent damage+stagger, and there's a couple attacks from rykard that you can jump over (the ones where his sword goes on the ground from right to left from your perspective).

If you have the equipment/levels, I think there's 2 ways to make it lot easier. You can either spam the weapon art (which spam staggers him, someone described how to do it above but you just spam the first hit basically), or you can hide behind a shield and spam poke attacks (that kind of annihilates a lot of bosses tbh, with rykard the shield poke does a surprising amount of damage and stagger per stamina cost).

You shouldn't be having range problems though. The spear gives you enough range to stand well out of the lava. Pay attention to walls though and run around to the other side if you're close to getting cornered.

What do you mean who doesnt love terrible camera angles and 50% of the attacks you can't see because he's that big so you just have to go by the noises lol

Just the regular light attacks with the spear ♥♥♥♥ rykard very hard. He is pretty much impossible without it too.
