helped some dude on this boss the other night from the forums, but i understand you are not looking for a handout. if you are doing a heavy roll you might want to consider going naked for the extra invulnerability frames, some of the flame moves on his second phase arn't as easy to dodge as his super slow and telegraphed moves on the first phase.
bleed is def the way to go as he has such a high health pool, if your having difficulty with melee on the second phase try crafting some blood arrows and get a shortbow with the barrage ash of war you can spam arrows from a distance on his second phase to have more of a safety net.
2nd phase realized I could use Torrent and doing hit and run was what brought me victory.
Naturally, neither weapon is worth much if they're not upgraded. Upgrades not only increase their damage but also increase the amount of bleed they stack per hit. This is especially true with the Uchigatana as you can use different Ashes of War and those flint thingies that allow you to mess with a weapon's scaling/elemental affinity by changing the upgrade path. Be sure to set the Uchigatana to the Blood upgrade path for 82~ bleed per hit at an upgrade level of +25.
Sidenote: Arcane scaling with Rivers of Blood damage is flat out broken and outpaces Dex. I haven't checked this out but a Blood Uchigatana+25 may show similar scaling. Bleed weapons with Arcane scaling will see their +Bleed effect scaled up slightly by Arcane.
Now, why Seppuku? You use Seppuku to damage yourself for a bonus to your attack power(iirc, only to Uchi). Seppuku causes Blood Loss, triggering the talisman to buff the attack of both weapons. Each bleed proc will also trigger the talisman's effect as well. Stack the Exalted Flesh consumable for another damage bonus. The rest of talisman slots are up to you.
Poison and Rot are good to stack small but constant damage on this guy. Hitting Phase 2 will remove any Poison and Rot, meaning you'll have to reapply them. You can stack poison with 2-3 of those craftable jars you throw. Every little bit helps, right?
Phase 2: hit his leg if u use melee only, if u use magic or sth then hit his hand.
Otherwise try tongue pit ahead
