can't use ashes vs black knife assassin

I'm in the black knife catacombs and online I've seen several people suggest summoning but I can't use the furlcalling remedy or use the ashes
why

I've already activated the summoning pool thing

I'm not sure what the actual requirements are but if 'D' from the Roundtable Hold is still alive, there should be a gold summon sign outside of the assassin's room that allows you to summon him for that fight.

I just did this again myself yesterday - I haven't followed any quests involving him yet and only spoke to him once in the hold but he was there.

that's what I've read and yet the sign isn't there and I can't use the furlcalling remedy

If you haven't already, try talking to D in the hold again with a Deathroot item in your inventory and exhausting all of his dialogue. If you don't have one of those yet, then this process is probably getting too involved for what should be a fairly easy boss and you might just want to go back later if you're struggling.

The Deathroot conversation is the only other interaction with him I might have had in this playthrough. If that doesn't do it, I couldn't say what the trigger is. No remedy is needed either way - he's either there or he isnt.
