Picking up gifts from other players

I've been doing a lot of jolly co-operation, recently I helped someone through a dungeon, and they gifted me like 10 Lord's runes. Then I randomly participated in a fightclub, where the host gave me another Lord's rune. I was a bit nervous picked them up, cuz I know some people can ♥♥♥♥ up your game or get you banned with modded items? but they seemed sound. Just wondering if it's common to be gifted so many Lord's runes, or are they likely modded? Should i risk using them or just leave them somewhere? Haven't finished me first playthrough yet so don't want to mess it up now

With runes specifically, you’re fine. Weapons and stuff could be be modded to have weird stats and you could be risking a ban by picking up an invalid weapon.

Firstly never pick up candy from strangers. Backing up save will do diddly if you get hacked stuff this isnt DS3 anymore were they sorted that out. But do back up if you think someone is fishy get out fast and use back up save

One coop stranger gifted me 10 bolas to cure poison when i was poisoned and my health was slowly ticking down. At first i was skeptical and hestitant to pick up the free candy, but that was so wholesome and i felt grateful. They helped me to get past a group of enemies i was unable to kill by myself. but then they got killed on the way to the boss and that was really heartbreaking, i wish we could have done the boss together so they could get their well deserved reward. This way i kinda felt like i was in their debt with no way of saying thanks or paying back.

To tell the truth, even without pickup candy, you could have your saves broken because of a hacker. So
1- save your saves constantly
2- be aware of what you had pick up. If it's legit stuff, that means it can exist by the rules of the game, so it's legit, even the guy drop the stuff with something which is not.
3- So look for fextralife if the gear or consumables you've pick up are in the range of what the game allow.
4- runes aren't a problem.
5- be careful of the level of weapon you've pickup. It will definitely scale your future online encounters from the most high weapon you've ever had, even you destroyed or droped it.
6- so maybe don't worth to pick up. Prefer ch3at 3ng1nE offline by following the same rules without EAC. So you'll get advantages of pickup without the risks.
