Miquella was inside the Haligtree to try and overcome his curse of eternal youth (and judging by the branch humanlike figured half-formed in the Haligtree roots i think he was managing to do just that

Mohg arrived when Melania was getting pounded by Chadhan and abducted Miquella, what followed is nebulous at best, unknown at worst, but the general consensus is that Miquella refused to help him/tried to control Mohg to which, Mohg answered by killing and stuffing him into the cocoon we see in the Mausoleum in order to be reborn as Mohgwyn a likely female consort Mohg would use to birth his dinasty as well as claim Elden Lord by usurping Marika with Mohgwyn,

Mohg enters by right in the olympus of "local ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ruins everything" and sits neatly inbetween Pontiff "war crimes" Sulyvahn and Aldritch "child murderer" saint of the deep

So, here is what happened.

Miquella was REBORN by Rennala and placed as an infant into the Halig Tree's womb to grow as alternative to the Erd tree. Meanwhile his sister Melania was fighting in Caelid against Radan, good old Blood Lord Mohg snuck into the Halig Tree, cut open the womb and snatched up Miquella while he was still developing. Mohq took Miquella back to his Blood Clot domain, put him inside a cocoon so he would be protected and continue to try and nurture him until he developed fully. This process was interrupted by the player, and Mohg came out to battle. Miquella may or may not be dead inside the cocoon.

Melania returns to Halig Tree to see the trees womb cut open and no Miquella but she has no idea where he is or went or what happened. So defeated, she sits in a chair beside where he was taken from and falls asleep until the player enters.

Melania awakens by the presence of the player, at first Melania though Miquella returned, then she sees with dissapointment it is the player, a tarnished and she knows what they are after. She tells them she is undefeated in battle, that they will witness true horror and they shall now, ROT!

He was always a child.
