its not a good explaination but the only i got ok
While dual wielding you will only use the right hand's ash, unless the left hand's weapon is a shield with parry, in which case you'll use the parry xD
They could have easily went with the system they used for weapon 2hand-ing for the skills as well.
They could have done something like:
- 2hand by pressing faceButton + bumper
- use skill by pressing faceButton + trigger
That way you could use the skill from which ever weapon you wanted, and they'd also have another free button for whatever :)
Only issue I see with this, is the fact that a bunch of ashes of war will have you 2hand your weapon in the animation while using them, even if you dual wield, it would look really weird for your left weapon to suddenly appear in your right hand, or even worse, use the left ash while animating the right hand weapon xD
it is far more reasonable for the left hand weapon's skill to be used because it is over writing the heavy attack of that weapon
I frankly hate the change to 2 handing because now instead of just Y to swap 1 hand to 2h i have 2 Y+ left or right, and half the time this doesnt work and just causes you to attack. its very clumsy and a bad change for those of us who used to swap between 1h and 2h a lot.
all shield skills overwrite your right hand wapon not just perry, also bow skills overwrite it, xbow doesnt because it just fires 2nd ammo type. i have yet to find a casting implement with a skill so no idea how that works.
making a combat acting require multiple button combinations is bad practice in general and also because they fail in executing it properly because weird delays and ♥♥♥♥, you have no idea how often i put away my weapon while trying to dismount torrenet
yea the animations for dual wield already move you to 2h and put away the left hand weapon at least for the ones i tested.
yea this is honestlly stupid, also hate the fact that imbues/ enchants go away if you swap weapon ( honestly pissed me of that i couldnt enchant shield and weapon in ds1 ) , like i understand the limitations in ds1 but it should have been fixed by now, its just either lazines or incompetence.
yes and this is dumb, if im trying to quickstep in a fight obviously swapming my offhand weapon into a 2h possition would screw up the timing and be very clunky. it would be simple to allow right hand to have light attack and heavy attack and left hand to have light attack +skill. and have right hand skill useable by 2 handing it ( also allow me to to hand with just Y like it used it for ♥♥♥♥ sakes why would i want to 2 hand any left hand weapon other then a bow which auto 2 hands)
Because that's all two-handing is. Holding interaction and pressing one of attack buttons. You press the right-hand attacks, it two-hands the right weapon. You press the left-hand attacks, it two-hands the left weapon. This is extremely intuitive.
no, the mechanic is stupid and inconsistent you are just used to it
As for why it works that way it's because the game is a console game and is built for a controller with a limited number of buttons. If they ever improve the button mapping for PCs you may be able to trigger left and right skills independently.
Well, another solution would be to pressure the console manufacturers to drop their archaic designs and put a few more buttons on their gamepads, like the grip buttons from the steam controller or xbox elite.
