But Azur and Lusat were masters and didn't go that way (they also didn't end up doing well in the end, but still they didn't go that way). Maybe that's because they WERE so good they avoided that fate.
But I now suspect the Queen did it to her as punishment for trying to upsurp her and coming back from banishment. I think it's establish that a lot of sorcerers (Sellen included) were known for experimenting on other sorcerers, and said experiments could be the source of the arcane faces you see around the place. They tend to be used to guard things, so they seem to be made or placed with a purpose, rather then an accident of creation.
It's mentioned a few times (specifically through Sellen's questline) that delving too deep into the mysteries of Glintstone magicks can have dire consequences. Lusat and Azur delved deeper than Sellen and they paid for it in their own way, too. Lusat's head gear is literally his head. That blue orb IS his head. That's the price he paid. I don't recall the price Azur paid (i may not have seen that bit of lore). Sellen delved too deep and she paid a higher price than either Lusat or Azur.
Ranni also delved deeper than any of them, but she sacrificed her body and gave up her piece of the Elden Ring. Remember, she is one of the demigods, one of the Children of Marika. She would have a more thorough understanding of how to prevent the consequences. Sacrificing her physical body may have been one of those counters, as implied by the prices paid by Lusat and Sellen (and Azur, though again, not sure what price he paid).
