ELDEN RING
Elden Ring Base Story still not figured out completely ?
Even after almost 1 month its still kinda unclear what actually triggerd the events happening in Elden Ring.

Story before the game starts -> which leads to the game itself:
-----------------------------
Ranni the witch stole the rune of death , made a special dagger out of it and together with some Assasins(black knifes) killed Godwyn
however things didnt go as planned and not only godwyns soul died , but she lost her body
when she killed him.

Marika was so upset about losing her loved son , that she shatterd the Elden Ring

Greater Will (Outer world God) was so angry about her shattering the Elden Ring that he imprisoned her in the Erdtree

With Marika gone and nobody knowing where she is... there is no King in the lands between.
So her children all see opportunity and grasp for the throne
nobody wins so nobody is worthy in the eyes of Greater Will

Thats why Greater Will wants a new champion (which could be you if proofen worthy)
-------------------------------
Game begins

The one thing i didnt understand from the beginning is:

Why tf did Ranni kill Godwyn ?
what does this even achieve ?

Ranni is the child of Radagon and Rennala.
She hates the Greater Will and Golden Order
Its also likley she is kinda hating on Marika a bit since Radagon left her mom for Marika.
(I think nobody besides us players know that Marika and Radagon is the same person)

But i still dont get her overall plan ?

She wants Greater Will to end his reign over the lands ?
Therefore she wants to kill all demigods that are his allys ?

And then she does a testkill or what ?
How is she thinking she could destroy Radahn or Malenia when she starts with Godwyn and others get aware that somebody is trying to kill them ?

That whole idea that Ranni killed Godwyn never mades sense to me and still doesnt ?

Some comments here kinda give a halfway reasonable explanation.

It ironically was maybe not even necessarily Rannis free will, but revenge story of the Moon God who used Ranni as a tool to create "chaos"

that would kinda make a bit of sense

I mean it would be a really silly idea of Ranni if she wanted to end Golden Order by just killing

Godwyn the Golden
General Radahn
Morgott, the Omen King
Mohg, Lord of Blood
Malenia the Severed
Godfrey First Elden Lord

and finally even
Marika the Eternal Queen

I mean what plan is that ? you see from lightyears away that this will never work
especially when after killing Godwyn all others will be alarmed.

You might get a surprise kill on one of those but you will never be able to kill all of them
lol. turns out even the first kill didnt work out as planned :(

But if it was some divine revenge story
it makes kind of sense

Moongod knows she will fail
but she is just a tool so he doesnt really care as long as it works out as intended
it will still achieve his purpouse of ending the Golden Order in the long run.

possible for me the best explanation so far.

Ranni was used by the Moon who wanted his revenge on Greater Will

By killing Godwyn it resulted in her mother destroying the golden order. She wouldn't need to kill them all to stop the golden order. They turned against each other immediately and fought over the shards throwing everything into chaos. Which didn't exist in the order, or so we are told by those who promote the order.

Whilst this didn't stop those wanting to return order it did stop it which is why the player is doing what they are doing. There is certainly something to do with the snow witch, the moon, the stars and how they play into it.
I think Ranni would have never guessed that killing Godwyn makes Marika destroy the Elden Ring.

"I will kill Marikas favourite son so she will destroy the elden ring ?"
not a logic that sounds reasonable

A Moongod however might have guessed that this could happen

Also Ranni is child of Radagon and Renalla
So Marika is her father ^^ not her mother ... lol
she doesnt know that Marika is her "father"

Mothers going nuts over the loss of their favourite child seems a theme in ER

Renalla also got mad/insane after losing Ranni
and devoted all her power into trying to rebirth Ranni
which led to her own people realizing she is insane and revolting against her
thats why she locked herself in that Academy room

So basically when Ranni killed Godwyn which unfortunately for her also killed herself "kinda"

both mothers: marika and Renalla lost sanity

EDIT: Elden ring has some intersting lore
its just that some of the stuff doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

A fun side note is that both

Rykard and Ranni hated the greater will as they were both children of Renalla and Radagon.
But Radahn who was also a child of Renalla and Radagon had a personality that preferred "order over free will" and did everything to prevent free will from being a thing. He wanted to conserve status quo but with himself being the leader/king.

So its kinda funny how 2 of the 3 children are the ones rebelling while 1 with the same parents is the one protecting Greater Will the most ;)

There certainly could have been another giving Ranni instructions as you say. But there isn't enough evidence to state that at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if future games or DLC built on the moon and stars aspect and that was the case. It could have been a plan from the snow witch as well which her outfit description highlights she was main influence on Ranni.

Going by George RR Martin past work mothers going nuts would be a normal background set up or plot point. I didn't really give that any thought to be honest as I have read that or something similar so many times before.
