Astel is the perfect example of what not to do with a boss.
First off, no, I don't care that the majority of the comments will be 'git gud' or 'you're bad haha'.

I've got all the souls under my belt save for Demon Souls and Sekiro, so it doesn't phase me.

Now, onto my salty gamer rant.

I can tolerate the remembrance Astel, even though he has a perfect timing dodge grab that instant kills you (i've got somewhere around 30-40 vigor rn, not running the 60 soft cap so that DOES contribute but even so), and that infuriating gravity slam that if he uses it, it's pretty much a done deal. It goes off quick enough that you have pretty much no time to get out. You CAN dodge it. Yes, you can. But the timing more pitch perfect than his teleport grab.

My real gripe is with the Astel in Snowfields. Why did they feel the need to make his teleport grab... 6 times more confusing and annoying? What was the point of that?

Alright, Gamer rant over. Let the 'git guds' flow in.

Î'm pretty confused about the boss complains in this forum. I mean.. malenia and malekith, ok hard.. radahan pre nerf maybe.

But fire giant and astel? What the ♥♥♥♥? Meanwhile grab wrestler king and radagon remain the most hardcore bosses imho and nobody talks about them.

But astel because of one poorly made grab attack and fire giants rolling attacks. Wowzer.

Why not complaining about the freaking flower in the tombsward cave next?

The Fire Giant isn't really difficult, so I can agree with you on that one.

As for Astel, most of his attacks consists of AoE-spamming, Laser-Sniping and cheap one-shot grabs. If you're playing Melee, you're going to have a bad time.

My own first encounter with Astel, beyond the lake of Rot, I had to beat the fellow on level 50-60 with hookclaws. Couldn't swap my loadout around either due to no Grace site in the area. Solo against the boss, since using Ashes-Summons were ineffective.

It's true that I could probably have prepared myself more for the fight by coming back later on, but in a blind playthrough while trying to complete a specific questline, this endeavor was living hell for me.

But I did it! :er_sweat:

I wonder if casters or ranged builds have any better luck on that fight.

Yeah maybe it comes in handy when you fight the bird bosses before so you can get used to some of the erratic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ astel can throw at you. But I dunno.. I just think the dodge timings are so generous against astel that I can't really imagine people having a lot of problems against it.

I still gotta say.. soemtimes.. lock on does more harm than good. Releasing it can help against big, fast bosses.

if you don't like astel's aoe spamming, you're in for a ride with the endgame bosses. All they do is spam AoEs

I actually find the easiest way to defeat bosses is to turn your graphics down to Low settings. People have a hard time with bosses because the lethality of their misplays make them OVERTHINK the boss attacks. They enter a state of panic and can't rationalize when to dodge so they instead go "ohshitohshitohshit" and spam the dodge button or do something equally stupid. This is not helped by how imposing the bosses look visually and how the lighting and effects can give them a greater threatening presence than they actually have. Malenia seems like an overpowered troll of a fight until you work out how to dodge the only attack that she can possibly threaten you with. Then the entire fight becomes a steamroll and it feels like armored knights that can't be staggered give you more trouble than she does.

Yes, I'm aware. Already beaten the game.

Astel is a real bully if you're still low-level and unprepared, is all.

I myself used the pre-nerf night and flame.

Pretty sure he's resistant to magic, though... so I dunno. Glad you managed, though, fam. With such a difficulty gap, too! Kudos.

I have more trouble without lock on, to be real.

I do un-lock in certain situations where I need to regain my position against a large foe, or temporarily attack a certain part without any camera lock. Not often, though.

The gravity spike is an extremely easy thing to avoid with a dodge if you actually look at it. And the teleport grab is not confusing in the slightest. Literally spawns in front of you, ans you dodge as he moves close to you. Even in the version when there are six of them. The one in front of you is the one you dodge. I honestly don't get your complaints.

Can't say for certain if this has ever affected me, but I don't think it has. I enjoy the imposing and threatening appearance, it excites me. The delays do get me a lot, though.

astel was one of the few fights i actually liked. felt more like a proper souls or cut bloodborn boss than most of the other stuff we got

Don't get me wrong. I love Astel's disturbing appearance, and you're right he's more akin to a bloodborne boss. I just don't like his grabs.

Everything else was a matter of 'i'm bad so i got hit'. All of them fair, all of them my fault.
