I should clarify this is if you're way higher level and upgrade level than the host.
I find it hard to believe it scales weapon level and the overall scaling in general is broken. I.E summoned phantoms at lvl 50 able to one shot me with moonveil from 1k-1,4k hp while hosts tickle me with theirs.
Only being 7 levels higher shouldn't scale you down at all, but your +5 weapon will if your friend hasn't upgraded any of their weapons, you don't have to have the weapon equipped.
Idk, when my brother summoned me for a watchdog fight when I was 30+ levels ahead of him with a +15 weapon I was hitting like a noodle, less damage than him. There's something very weird about how it scales phantoms.
Yes, scales the most level player all the way down towards the lower level player. I play with my GF. She is lvl 20, I'm lvl 120, and i get DESTROYED by the mobs in the Tree Sentinel area. It also bumps down your spell casting speed
