What happened? Simple, it got Chaotic fun.
You'll never know what to expect in a PvP battle. One invader to the other could be something entirely different.
Why does it always have be to standard sword vs sword? We already did that for 3 full games.
We now got more fun tools at our disposal and we will use them in PvP.
That doesnt make any sense. All those things you mentioned were bugs or hacks, which fromsoft didnt really do anything against except add a non working anti cheat to the game lmao.
If anything the horrid state of invasions and duels means hackers are even more inclined to invade and hack people into a infinite death loop for being a ganker since the game already favors the host. Back in DS3 it was possible to 1v3 the host and his gankers if you had good spacing, now with the dex and int spam its basically impossible.
EDIT: I take that back actually I killed 1 guy who probably was as bad as I am lmao
like its ♥♥♥♥♥♥ level stuff
it uses the bb/ds3/sekiro engine, and plays almost exactly like ds3. Its dark souls with a new coat of paint cause they ended the souls story with 3. Its perfectly reasonable for people to expect the game to also keep the ds3 invasion balance.
Weird, I would assume things are improved or discarded. Sadly we have this half/half solution now. Hopefully in Elden Ring 2 Invasions are just gone and the game engine and balance is retooled around whether and if yes how they want coop to work. And if you enjoy PvP then you can always pick up a fighting game. I mean even the worst ones are significantly better than DS PvP is.
But I think the charm of DS PvP was the fact that you had to be on your toes at all times BECAUSE you could get invaded at any moment (provided you weren't hollow of course). It forced you to change the way you thought about weapons or spells and incorporate a mindset of .... "is my build ALSO viable against a real person?" And in fact, beating a real person when you least expect it almost gave you the same sense of jubilation you would get from beating a boss.
A good, balanced PvP fight in a Soulsborne game was like a boxing match. You circle each other, throw jabs, test the waters a bit and then.. you go for it. Some fights could last 5mins (or more). It was the culmination of my build and skills verses yours. With the added bonus of using the environment to win a fight as well. And spellcaster PvP players had to be three steps ahead in order to win with spells alone. But even they would have to rely on dodging and melee skills most of the time.
In ER... it's... puke out some colourful spells and watch the healthbar go down in one to two hits.
Fair enough. On a surface level, I agree. The vast majority of PvP invasions go down that way in DS2, DS3 and ER.
However, I think it’s important to distinguish between invasion PvP and arena PvP. Artorias of the abyss introduced arena matches with 1v1, 2v2, etc. it was my goto for like-minded PvP‘ers looking for a no BS, uninterrupted fight. DS2 continued that and so did DS3.
Now that being said… I’m like 90% sure From Soft will be releasing such a mode in a later DLC (according to data mine leaks). And by then, one could hope, they will have had enough patches under their belt to balance out this mess.
In its current state, I won’t willingly partake in invasions, I’ll wait for 1v1 arena.
The number of ER invasions I've seen end with a single L2 weapon art is unreal.
