You won't have a spell only character with these though... i use them on a mostly faith/ light dex character with twinblade.
you can buy a starter seal from the twin maiden husk merchant at the roundtable hold.
there's also a unique dragon seal you can get at the stonesword fogwall dungeon at the start of the game.
i just can't help but laugh at posts like this. the dragon spells are honestly ridiculously powerful, i've been using them as my paladin/dragon knight character for the vast majority of the game and they're STILL ridiculously powerful even in the later parts of the game. honestly, the breath spells need a nerf if anything, especially frost and rot breath.
i can only assume people who somehow think the dragon spells suck don't realize you can upgrade seals at the blacksmith to boost damage of incantations. i've been using the bestial seal, i've had it at +13 for a long time, dragon breath spells obliterate pretty much everything, including bosses. i'm at the mountaintops of the giants and they're still working great.
powerful compared to what exactly? in comparison to sorcery? sorceries hit harder and are faster to cast, any of the breath attacks can do around 900 damage on end game bosses using an entire mana bar with 40 mind. that is 900 damage for 40 mind worth of mana, any spell caster sorcery build can easily do 10000 with a whole mana bar. they are strong in the open world but they are absolutely useless in end game. the only benefit is the status buffs. Not to mention the animations take so long to cast you will almost certainly never get them off 1v1 against bosses, you have to use a summon. They are objectively awful. They are only useful in open world encounters and even then its still sub par to other magic.
i have no clue how doing 900 damage to any boss using 40 mind worth of mana in any world is busted.
nythand, you already made up your mind thinking the dragon spells suck. i'm not interested in getting into a debate over balance in a game.
you're doing something very wrong. if you prefer sorcery, stick with sorcery, that's fine. i just genuinely don't understand how someone can think the dragon spells suck because that hasn't been my experience with them whatsoever.
i'm doing about 1500 damage with two breath casts one after the other. my mind stat is 15, i've barely levelled it. the range on the breath is ridiculous. the long casting time isn't that big a deal considering you aren't supposed to try using it in the heat of battle, it's meant to be a pre-emptive strike.
i'm not even using an optimal seal to use the dragon magic. i have a +13 bestial seal. it was all i had early in the game and i ran out of smithing stones to get it higher. it's been kicking everything's ass.
despite that, i have cast it mid-battle quite a few times successfully. it's risky, but the payoff has been worth it for me.
i don't know what you're doing wrong compared to pretty much everyone else who picks up and just plays all agree that they're very strong.
