Melee is fine. Learn to dodge, parry, block. If you haven't played other games like that you might struggle at start. If you spend 9 hours on one boss and/or need coop to beat it - then ... you are doing something wrong. Or are horribly mistiming your actions, or fat rolling, or idk.
Magic on the other hand - ranged by nature and along with summons, some ashes _and_ coop available on top - is indeed ridiculously overpowered and has no place in this game. They shouldn't nerf/balance it. They should rip it off.
with magic u r skipping the mechanics
All in all, I would say that both melee and magic have their ups and downs. But nowhere near "overpowered, bosses go down in one shot". I have yet to do damage that massive.
Well.. I tried a lvl 140 70 int.. some faith .. vigor yada yada azur comet build. Was okay if you have a punching bag ready so you can spam azur with unlimited fp flask. Other than that... it's pfalanx and pebble spam. With some adula moonblade inbetween and moonweil for some close quarter action.
I did most of the left over content after the endboss with it.. and I wasn't amazed except on torrent. Deleting open world stuff while on torrent is awesome.
When people say 1 shot they mean they beat them on their first try, not that they beat them in a single attack.
Not in this context.
But, melee is fun! lol
