This is an action RPG with multiplayer intertwined into the singleplayer experience.
It's primarily a singleplayer journey, but it can be influenced by other players through Co-op aswell as PvP. You won't encounter PvP situations as a solo player.
To engage multiplayer, you need to use in-game items or mechanics in order to access co-op at the cost of exposing yourself to PvP invasions.
There's a reason Arena .Net refused to call Guild Wars 1 an mmo and labelled it a CORPG (Cooperative Online Role Playing Game) instead.
