Is this an MMORPG?
Think about it, an MMO is defined by interaction with a large number of players. That's exactly what bloodstains, messages and ghosts are. You get to interact with an extreme amount of players, albeit indirectly, throughout your playthrough. Not to mention the multiplayer aspects. I'd call the souls games something like "indirect MMORPGs" or something.

I guess technically yes, since its a large number of players on a server interacting with each other, but thats kind of a stretch

This is an action RPG with multiplayer intertwined into the singleplayer experience.

It's primarily a singleplayer journey, but it can be influenced by other players through Co-op aswell as PvP. You won't encounter PvP situations as a solo player.

To engage multiplayer, you need to use in-game items or mechanics in order to access co-op at the cost of exposing yourself to PvP invasions.

No an MMO is defined by having a large number of players you can interact with all in the same space. Bloodstains don't count as you aren't interacting with that player in real-time you are essentially watching a log of their death. If you could see hundreds of players all wandering around about around you and interact with them then it would be but that isn't the case. Also being able to group up with two other players for boss fights isn't massive. Same reason why Warframe and Destiny aren't mmos, sure i can talk to hundreds or thousands of people in chat but i can only play with and against a handful of people at any one time.

There's a reason Arena .Net refused to call Guild Wars 1 an mmo and labelled it a CORPG (Cooperative Online Role Playing Game) instead.

Kind of, I guess, sometimes it's pretty lonely "Looking from up here, it's as if each flame were a small dream, from each person. They are like a bonfire of dreams, don't they? I'm just a temporary visitor taking comfort from the flame"- Guts, OG Clanger and banger

No, ER has gameplay.

No...
How is it an MMO when you can only have 4-5 people in a single world lmao
BirdDinosaur Mar 17, 2022 @ 6:07am
no, its actually a little more complex than that. A typical mmo would mean that players are fully interact-able and on a massive scale on any single server. ER doesn't do that, the shadows aren't even really there. I'd sooner consider Destiny 2 an mmo than ER lol but no, Destiny 2 is not an mmo either.

this is a mmorpg
but without the typical mmo
and without the typical rpg

The game is basically if assassins creed were an mmo.
