Best shield with no active skill

Hey guys. This is my first post on this forum. I'm currently looking for the shield with the best damage negation stats that doesn't come with an active skill. The reason being is that I want to use the active skill of my right-handed weapon without having to remove my left-handed shield to do so. Right now I'm using the Golden Beast Crest Shield which has decent damage negation, but I feel like there's got to be something better out there. Preferably with something with improved magic negation that still has 100 physical negation and decent guard boost. Any ideas? All help is welcome!

Best medium shields are The Turtle shield or the Brass Shield

Best Heavy shield is definitely Fingerprint GS

I think Bras Shield has to be pound for pound the best shield in the game.

It's 6 pounds lighter with 8 less STR than Golden Beast Crest and it only has one less guard boost point.

Eclipse Crest greatshield is also great but 30str and very heavy. Guard boost and defense makes it hands down better than brass shield though.

Icon shield is cool if you don't mind not having 100 physical block.

..if you mean in the first blacksmith tab only equipped items show up there, your unequipped items are in the next one, i believe ashes of war only needed the first whetstone but i dun remember

Mausoleum Knight(Aka Eclipse). I used it basically my whole playthrough. Not many Big Shields have "No Skill".

Brass is also good.

I would have abused the hell out of Thumbprint lol

You can't customize unique weapons/shields with ashes. So anything that takes a somber smithing stone to upgrade you won't be able to customize the ash of war on.

I checked all the tabs and nothing. But I do remember seeing the turtle shell shield in the menu I believe, which comes with Bash, so Im missing something.

Whetblades don't get used up. That said, certain "unique" shields can't have ashes put on them. The two you listed fall into this category. To see which ones do and don't check the fextralife wiki pages. For the most part they list if you can uses ashes on them or not, although sometimes you will have to check the comments if the information is missing/wrong.

Greatshield:
1. Fingerprint stone shield
2. Visage shield
3. Haligtree crest shield
4. Gilded greatshield

Medium shields:
1. Brass shield beats everything
2. though silver mirrorshield has the best magic negate at a high 89

Small shields:
1. Kinda tuff to say but from what im seeing Gilded iron shield
2. Ice crest shield
3. Smoldering shield

• Comes with Parry (will need the "No Skill" ash of war).
  
• Will need to be upgraded a couple levels to replace your Brass Shield, but ultimately worth it.

Best (Non-Golden) Greatshield: Eclipse Crest Greatshield
-Pros:

• 100% physical negation.
  
• Whopping 72% magic negation.
  
• Comes with No Skill.
  
• Relatively easy (skill wise) to farm from 1 headless knight right by a Grace Site.
  
• Amazing passive: raises Immunity, Robustness, and Focus by 50 each.

-Cons:

• Greatshield weight (15).
  
• Might take some time to farm from 1 headless knight due to drop rates.
  
• High STR requirement (32).

please learn what the best is really. the eclipse gs is not nearly as strong as fingerprint gs. its not even close.

brass shield is flat out better than inverted hawk and will stay better. 3.5 weight dont justify the weaker shield. shields are all about guardboost. if that value sucks itll never be good. and brass has by far the highest guardboost in the whole game for medium shields. its kinda silly.

the overall best shield is fingerprint shield tough. 100% phys and 80% againist everything else. and well 90 guardboost is unmatched. and given you can get to 100 makes it absolutly broken.

No need for rude comments man, this is from my personal experience and my opinion :) (as stated at the top). I don't have that shield yet, so I can't comment on it.

The shield with best defense stats is the Fingerprint Stone Shield. You can remove the Shield Bash Skill and add the No Skill to it so you use the weapon skill even if you have the shield equipped.

I use a few shields. The gold one dropped by those big knights (capital city). That' a tower shield with 100% physical resist. There's the spearman shield, which is a good early to mid game tower shield.

There's there's the Carian Knight's Shield from that NPC invader in the library. GREAT shield. 100% physical resist (that's good for a none tower). Can use weapon arts with it. Can put on ashes if you like. And it goes well with the magic sword and the armor too (I add a great helm myself). Requires less stats to use too. Tower shields tend to need high strength to even use at all. Not an issue here. Good if you use a katana or one handed swords.
