Killing the ancient dragon

I have seen a load of YouTube videos where they get a ton of runes by killing the ancient dragon in the first few hours of the game to give there character huge level boost
Is there a down side to this, does it lock a questline later?

am not really sure about this, but i finished the game with most of the quests done...and nobody mentioned him (NPCs or players), i killed him after finishing the game....got 5 dragon hearts

nope, it's very tedious. the intended way to beat that dragon is by killing the smaller dragons around it, each dragon killed takes off a chunk of the big ones HP, but bleed is percentage damage and From didn't make the dragon immune.

I don't think there is any quest tied to him, but I think you need to kill him for one of the achievements.

When yes, i kill him from behind with bleeding damage, he gives 75k runes or something like that.

pretty nice trick to get like 15 levels since when it dies it gives around 75k but if you go to beach at start and get a chicken foot you get 96k and 5 dragon hearts so theres no point punishing yourself to get breath attacks with regular dragons.

and since in like 30 mins you can do this if you only get a bleed weapon.

wonder why they even made this since its the most pathetic boss ever actually it isnt even a boss its just a punching bag you hit for like 5 mins and get free exp

you can get the morning star or start as a samurai it's even faster, but the morning star is just a little detour

There's no questline for her. Go grab a golden fowl foot and use it before you kill her. Will give you around 100k runes right at the beginning. Go pick up the radagon soreseal too right next to her and your early game melee character is set. Also recommend checking out the dungeon that you can unlock with swordstone keys in the tutorial cave. You can pick up the erdtree's favor talisman there which is the equivalent of ring of favor in Dark Souls. You'll have to kill Margit for the second Talisman slot though

I want to contribute is that it's actually a female. Her name in the lore is Greyoll. And since you need those 5 hearts to get all the dragon incantations, I'm pretty sure there is no downside to killing her.
