Am I under leveled or are lots of bosses supposed to be 1 hit kills?
fire salamander, triple pot invader bosses, dragons, giants, etc. so many bosses even after 34 vigor are 1 tapping me. is that just what the devs were going for or should i level up vigor more so i dont get 1 tapped?

Vigor gets you part of the way there, but your defense mainly comes from your character level. So if you find you're taking a ton of damage, then leveling up will help. I'd probably recommend clearing some optional bosses and exploring. You can gain a lot more than just runes that way. If you just sit in a spot and grind, you can be more efficient in rune farming, but then you'll just be missing out on the rest of the content and items that come with exploring.

I've got vig around 50 and it gives me at least 2-3 hits against anything I've met so far up to Leyndell

get more vigor, it's the most important stat basically.
For weapon damage, upgrade levels are far more important so even if you just hit the minimum requirement you should be fine.

everything up to 60 is worth it

what's your absorption like

Ok so I beat the salamander on my 5th try. Easier if he doesn't trap you with lava or body slam you. The rest including the divine bridge giants not so much

The status screen says nothing about absorption. Please be more specific.

Apologies, in this game it is Damage Negation

Getting hit in the head is major damage too. That happens ALOT with bosses. Or if you are doing an action and getting hit, you take way more than standing still. These maybe the major one shot problems you are having. Some do just have a death beam though.

What’s your overall level? Each level up gains overall defense, so something that one shots a player at level 50 with 30 vigor will not one shot a player at 70 with 30 vigor

Nah it's relatively common. It's very weird too. I have 50+ vigor and i wear heavy armor and most bosses up till now were two shotting me (from mid to late game). Now, the boss prior to the final boss (as far as I'm aware) did reasonable damage (didn't like the boss but the damage was relatively reasonable for an endgame boss). It's weird, it's as though the damage they gave to bosses was really really not thought through.

From what i can tell, the optional bosses do a helluva lot more damage than the mandatory ones.
which makes sense in a way but does feel weird sometimes.
This game is very interesting as you can cheese every boss in it, you might die many times trying to find proper cheese, but it is how it is. I get two hits by damn normal mobs in some caves and lands

I've put in 100+ hours with my vigor level at 20. I've took my time, explored the maps thoroughly, killed nearly every enemy/boss everywhere right up to entering Leyndell City. Haven't taken more than maybe 6 tries on any given boss to kill them. Only now is it starting to kind of feel like I should pump some extra levels into Vig (around beginning of late-game). I'm not even that great at souls games.

I'm playing a quality build, so averaged stats, balanced melee/magic/ranged. Pick weapons, stick with them & upgrade max. Wear half decent armor & use the phys/non-phys defense buff talismans. Pick a decent summons & upgrade it. Should be a relative breeze. I don't understand what everyone else is doing that requires Vig at level 40-50, but it really isn't necessary. Seems like overkill. I've barely been oneshot & when I did, I just came back later & whooped them.

Also, pick a decent shield with 100% damage defense (I think eagle heater shield is the better early game one; red & black.) The later game one I found best balance is brass shield. Pick one & upgrade the hell out of that too. It will considerably reduce how much stamina you lose on blocking & let you tank (enough) no matter your build.

I thought upgrading shields only increased the damage done by the shield, like when you're using it to attack?

Edit: never mind, i guess upgrading a shield improves guard boost and stamina reduction, every other tier of upgrade.
