Have I made a mistake upgrading my started sword?
Playing as the Samurai and early on I upgraded his sword once. It always seemed better than anything else I was picking up as it had bleed as a bonus stat. Then I got other weapons with bleed but overall they were worse. So then I upgraded to level 3 at the church near starting area. Then I got to the round table and got it to level 5 (or 6?), so even when I get something with better stats I can;t use it due to it either being to heavy or need to higher a level of Strength etc.

So do I just keep levelling it?
I keep levelling strength and Dex one point each and then vigour as well.
Should I max out my starting weapon or use a newer one and upgrade it, like will i max out my starter weapon wasting lots of resources when I could have got a newer weapon much more powerful at say level 5 or something?

The uchigatana (the samurai's starting sword) is one of the best weapons in the game, so no. You didn't make a mistake. In fact, if you want, you can find a second uchigatana to dual-wield them.

Uchigatana is one of the strongest bleed weapons in the game, so you're going to be fine for the most part. The only struggle you will have is against high poise enemies and stone based enemies (enemies literally made of rock that your weapons bounce off of).

Uchigatana has the best base stats and scaling of any katana in the game, so no. The only area others will beat it is in special effects/bonus damage, and weapon arts. That's why Moonveil is busted right now.

Yeah, it's perfectly fine weapon to level. There's another one in a Dungeon somewhere so that you could dual wield them if you'd like.

Oh, dual wielding?
Will it double my damage output?
Can I still block?
How does ash work when dual wielding?
Where is it?
Can I mix and match, like have may started weapon for the bleed and then maybe another weapon to do poison?

What other weapon should I start levelling up to deal with stone monsters?

Anything blunt, hell even Torch deal more damage to those crystal/stone mobs than a sharp weapon.

I am using myself the morning star that you get in one of that wagons in the first camp next of the map. Obviouslly only for those types of mobs.

There is nthing wrong with starting equipment. Thats not a bad weapon, its super flexible, so many ashes to choose from so many damage types and scaling for diffent builds, you could easily use that weapon for the hole game.

Also, you can get unlimited smithing stones of all sizes EXCEPT for the final smithing stones used to upgrade weapons to +10 or +25. Unless s you upgraded it to +25, the worst you have done is given yourself a reason to do a little bit of grinding and seeking out the smithing stone bells.

Pierce aslo does better against stone enemies then slashing, so rapier or spear, or even a pick axe.
