I get poise during charge attacks, and it saved me many times. Of course, dodging is usually safer than tanking, but not always
I bet you think damage negation does nothing, too.
Poise and rolls are for entire different things though. Rolls are for avoiding damage entirely, poise for for inflicting damage through an attack, i.e. if you're going to win a trade or can stun-lock someone to death.
