Killed "first step" NPC...do I have to "re-roll"?

Yes, I was clueless. Yes, I got the "dew" and tried to pay my atonement...but apparently you can't revive main NPC's like this? After killing Godrick, I was hoping to move-on, quest-wise, ya know, the fingers and invading other player worlds etc., so that I can move on to that rune farm location where ya cheese the bird falling off cliff, etc. any other way to get to this location, or another way to revive dead NPC's, without re-rolling? Thanks in advance!

So the good news, is you can get a different finger later in the game (Volcano Manor) that works the same way as the bloody finger that questline can get you...

You actually are NOT out of luck.

As for the palace... Yes you can still get there, but not till late game at this point:

That is the spot, and the link I posted will also get you there...

However with the white mask varre quest you can get there early-midgame...
Without it, you cannot get their till late game
