How does poison/scarlet rot damage work
Title. I understand that arcane scaling is bugged or not working properly as intended, but I am more curious about damage numbers. More specifically, does poison damage increase based on arcane scaling, or attack power, or dex scaling, etc.

Bump, info pls.
Are you sure it's not a fixed number?
They don't scale.
From my experience using Rot Breath Most things lost about 50% HP i cheesed quite a few open world bosses like this and only had to hit most with 2 breaths. Which makes me think that for none players its % based. But i cannot prove that just kinda how it feels after doing it so many times. The ones that didnt need 2 breaths took so much damage from the attack itself that they died from the first round of rot.
Damage doesn’t scale, you can only increase how fast the status builds on enemies

He's asking about rot damage itself, not the damage from rot breath which is faith based to be quite honest desu

I mean i didnt know how he applies it i used Rot breath and a poison Katana Altough i have switched to ice since but it was just something i observed.
As the others said, Arcane only scales the speed of applying status effects in many (but not all) cases but has no effect on damage per tick.

From what I've seen, the DoT damage from Poison and Rot only seem to be affected by the weapon/spell that applied the affect (Poison applied with a Venomfang Claw, for example will deal nearly twice as much damage per tick as poison applied by a Mist spell - total durations may vary though) and the maximum health of the enemy - higher health = more damage per tick.

I haven't seen much testing posted about the Rot effect but some people on the wiki comments at least have posted various tests for Poison.

Ah so poison scales according to the enemy's HP? Good to know.
damage per tick for poison isnt based on enemy health, its based on the weapon you use. Poison arrows will always tick for 9 but venomous fang will always tick for 17.

Only scarlet rot ticks for a % of max health

Well, that wasn't true when I tested poison damage immediately before making the last post.

I hit several enemies with Mist, a Poison-infused rapier, and the Venomfang claws. On a rune bear in Limgrave, the Mist and Rapier poisoned for 9-damage per tick while the Venomfang hit for 17 per. Changing nothing, I used the same weapons on soldiers and dogs in Caelid - soliders ticked for 7 and 15 respectively and the dogs ticked for 8 and 16.

I can't say with 100% certainty that it's health-related but there's clearly some kind of variation between the damage done to different enemy types.

Id say it has to do with their resistance most likely but it most definitely isnt a percent of their max health
The same way it has in every Fromsoft game before it.

It's a DOT that deals damage as a percent of your total health per second. So how much total health you have doesn't matter, it will kill at the same speed.

Poison has always been a percent of max health damage. It's why poison has always been the best method to cheese enemies with large health pools.
i think both types once procked is a percent of hp. and has so many tic's befor it ends. rot seems to do more dmg per tick then poison, but it seems like they both do the same amount over all in the end.. it is what i have noticed. as i use a lonbow/crossbow to cheese some times. i have a +8 bow, and a +19 crossbow. i use the pully corss bow cause it shooting 3 bolts at once is nice af
