Best weapon for shield build?

Just looking for opinions, I realize that it might be user preference. I'm currently just using a long sword and doing a strength build. I have completed several souls like games in the past and always go shields.

I have been thinking of going something like a pike or spear to get better results?

As a side note, I'm wierd with my toons as I like to make back stories for them when I start. So once I have my weapon of choice, I prefer not to change it unless I feel stuck. So once I decide on a type of weapon, I would like to stay with it if possible.

Spear is awesome cause you can poke while keeping the shield up (Supposedly you can with rapiers too, haven't tested)

I hate pike / polearm moveset in FS games.

I always use dex. Katana/ short sword. I also have shield in my standard loadout.

You can do that with thrusting swords/rapiers as well, I'm having some fun using shields and the Frozen Needle

Short swords aren't very sexy but I beat the game with the crystal sword and shield.

Any thrust-dedicated weapon should have the option to attack with the shield up, which is quite handy... though their moveset has its own issues, mainly the fact that they typically have zero AoE and verticality. Any weapon works just fine with shields though, others just have to alternate attacking and defending. Faster weapons can be good if you're not confident in your skills, since you'll have shorter windows of lowering the shield.

cross naginata is prob the best weapon to go with shield. great base damage , have slash and trust attack , can be use to poke with shield , have BLEED on it , can be buff , can be infused , weapon art can be change.

there is weapon that will do more upfront damage than this one but the bleed make it a good weapon for all new game cycle , you could even put an other status effect on it and have 2 status on the weapon making poking extreme powerfull and safe

if you go dex it can reach A scaling , B B quality or B+ heavy str

if you really want to fully commit to a shield build, then you'd best take into consideration that a certain boss may just have a mechanic that benefits greatly from hitting on a shield even if you fully block her damage.

Have a back up plan/weapon, personally i recommend a claw weapon with bloodloss.

with the naginata bleed its working fine so no need for a backup weapon
