Best weapon for shield build?

Just looking for opinions, I realize that it might be user preference. I'm currently just using a long sword and doing a strength build. I have completed several souls like games in the past and always go shields.

I have been thinking of going something like a pike or spear to get better results?

As a side note, I'm wierd with my toons as I like to make back stories for them when I start. So once I have my weapon of choice, I prefer not to change it unless I feel stuck. So once I decide on a type of weapon, I would like to stay with it if possible.

At least to my knowledge, sadly, no.
I tried it just now and it didn't work, you just block with the left hand shield.

They do not, unfortunately.

Spears and rapiers do poke with your shield but you have to be very good about stamina management. Problem with cross naginata is there are very limited moves worth using, with shield out you're absusing running R1, while two handing you're abusing run R2. Jump R2 is almost always right out. Your lights suck, your heavies are too slow and don't have the benefit of easily breaking stance and staggering like other large weapons. You also have to actually untarget and move your character into a certain position if you want to use some of the moves more effectively. The only other upside is there are some very light spears to put into your offhand for fights that don't involve your shield.

EDIT: Oh yes I also forgot to mention that any enemies that require striking weapons are practically unkillable you are either better off two handing your shield(so upgrade it) or having a backup striking weapon, even at a lower level it's worth it. For undead switch to holy weapon you can shred the undead birds and other boss monsters with it.

I have been using a straight sword with the Brass Shield and been really enjoying doing the guard counters. It is less safe than with a thrusting weapon, but when you use the Brass Shield with the Barricade ashes of war as well as a few levels on the shield you can negate all stamina damage with the buff up. So you use the ashes of war, block the targets full combo, then counter with massive damage. I've been enjoying feeling like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wall as my foes throw themselves against my impenetrable guard!

I have the great epee, it felt so slow for counter attacking. Am I doing something wrong?
