Rapier/Dex guy here. Depends on play style, gear, ashes, carry weight and even the shield special attack & type.
The way they've done the weapons system for some of the weapons is quite cool in ER, it gives you more variety for PvE mayhem and allows you to mess around with builds a little more freely.
On the flip side, the normal sword length of a rapier is infuriating against a lot of enemies. "I will just stab spam this early game giant troll, or a golem archer in the ankles EZ no problem-how the ♥♥♥♥ am I missing so often!? it is a literal giant enemy! stop missing his feet!"
And a guard counter even with many spears will miss against those wacky fire breathing sword birds, so a rapier is often ♥♥♥♥ out of luck as well if the angle and motions are not just right. (That said nailing the guard counter on birds with a longer pike... usually just has the birds poise through the hit to breath fire. huh.)
So I switched to a Rapier for the past 10-ish hrs and it's been working better for me. A lot of the faster enemies used to stagger me especially if there are more than 1. With Rapier I can hit them faster than they hit me. Also, it feels I'm using less stamina which means I can keep my shield up for longer with the Rapier. I just recently found a Great Rapier which is super long that I need to see if it's a mix of the best of both worlds or not lol
While I used a mace? (or was it the morning star? Never saw bleed trigger in the brawl... but also teleport spam would reduce bleed bar build) to do the job, I'm sure a rapier would do a much better job than my default preference of "Regular greatswords (bastard sword moveset)" against ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like that teleporting wizard in Cairian study hall.
Sometimes even when you love larger weapons on average, you sigh and roll your eyes at people saying "If literally anyone can do it with the slowest weapon possible, that means enemies are totally balanced for any weapon!", and pick up your backup faster weapon.

Round 1-4: "Okay the internet told me stagger is EZ mode, big weapons are EZ mode, bleed is EZ mode, wild strikes is EZ mode because hyperarmor. The internet never lies! My wild strikes boat anchor covered in bleed grease shall be instant win casual mode!"
*The internet lied*
round 5: Beating bell hunter to death with a faster, weaker weapon that lets me panic dodge better.
Repeat for next bell hunter.
This concept applies to rapiers vs spears. Just like "Smaller weapons can have trouble with horrible enemy hitbox and player attack free aim/lock on logic sometimes" applies to rapiers vs spears.
