Vagabond is probably the best starting class due to its heavy armor, allowing you to take an additional hit or two, and highest starting HP. They're best for builds that just invest in vigor, endurance and strength.
Also, vagabond and confessor both have 9 int so you can work your way into casting faster than say, "prophet wearing a bathrobe wants to be a wizard instead"
It is more annoying to get a good 100% physical shield quickly than it is the other stuff quickly if you are not used to these games.
Also anyone saying "But you can just buy one you idiot!", well, you can just buy a longbow and the uchi is loot in one of the first mini dungeons in the game. And then suddenly they backpedal on the 'Who cares if you don't start with it you can get it later" argument.
If you go vagabond you will need to unequip something to stop having a heavy load, which causes a fat roll bad dodge instead of the medium load decent dodge.
Samurai IS a really solid start! But it favors an all in on offense mindset, and works better if you are already used to these games. If like you say, you are not used to them, it can do you more harm than good. Which is why it is in this odd zone of "Either 3rd place pick, or 1st place pick"
And again, it is just as easy to get the uchi katana and longbow (you can get the uchi before even reaching the main hub generally... if you know where it is, that is) as it is to get what confessor starts with.
So laugh in the face of any hyporcrite that just wants to pat themselves on the back with "But it's so EASY! (For me, pro gamer)" telling you not to care about your starter gear for Confessor or Vagabond, who gets cold feet about it also not mattering for Samurai who's gear is also as readily accessible as loot/purchase sooner rather than later. (again, if you knew where it was).
But starting the game with a shield that laughs at dogs? Oh man. That is comfort you can't buy at a vendor.
DexInt(Spellblade) DexStr(Bleeds) (Faith/Dex or Faith/Str) All of these builds are GREAT.
Just depends if you wanna be a mage, swordsman, or holywarrior.
Samurai, because attack
Vagabond, because defense
but even better is choose what you like.. it is RPG, even when it is ARPG
then choose what fit to you
and mage can be easy, because there is few overpowered spells.
on other hand is squishy
but any character can be anything.. what u choose at beginning dont determine build, dont restrict you from anything.
Samurai probably has the easiest start though, and Astrologer has the easiest end.
Trick there (to be fair a lot of games there is a point discrepancy), in this game wretch is no more points efficient than any other class.
You pick wretch if you want a challenge run, not for "Good stats".
Nothing wrong with wretch if you love it. The only thing wrong with wretch is suggesting it to the newbies as if there is some kind of benefit. After all, we want the new guys to stick around, not get discouraged when their naked diaper man with a club still can't source a good pair of pants while being eaten by a bear.
Comedy/serious reason that is true. Vigor scaling is slow and sucks early compared to later. but 15 vigor vagabond got me a lot of "Wow, that ALMOST one shot me" moments that would have totally literally one shot killed me in the early game with only 10 vigor or something.
Before I had unlocked leveling up. remember, people saying 'Well you can level up fast so what" are also taking things for granted. Like how apparently mini dungeon graces don't count towards unlocking it. etc.
Bandit if you're interested in checking out a more Arcane heavy build, has been my favorite so far
