Tbh armor in the souls series and also in this game is very... situational. Movement is much better than defense, since you can dodge most attacks. And being heavily armored is only 2 or so attacks more from a strong enemy, at best, it's much more viable to simply dodge and position better. Your innate defense stats make much more of an impact, in my opinion.

THOUGH most games have a feature where it makes the helmet invisible, that way you can see the face you worked hard on while getting the stats from the helm
