Is vigor really that important?
I've dumped a lot of points into stats that provide defensive boosts, but not a lot into vigor. i seem to be doing okay thus far. I've reached the Altus Plains and don't feel like I'm struggling TOO much. Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't having higher resistances/defense make up for not having a lot of raw HP? Or am I misunderstanding something about the game mechanics?

yes vigor is important, cause without HP you would have to have perfect reactions to avoid being 1 shot

Right, but if your defense stats are higher it reduces the damage of the attack, therefore you don't need as much HP to survive it, right? I have like 18 vigor and I've lost against a few bosses but have never been one-shot, even against some of the stronger ones.

High vigor grants you the right to make a mistake every now and then on a boss fight and survive. For players like me (it was my first souls game) it helps a lot.

vigor is best, bigger health bar stops you from being 1 shot. youre gimping yourself if you dont level up your vigor enough to get the full benefit from chugging a flask

They help a bit... but unfortunately From decided to stick with the DS3 armor system here. The system makes all defensive buffs multiplicative, with each item providing relatively low percentages... which means getting your mitigation much over 50 requires a lot of investment, way more than doubling your HP would early on with the way Vigor scaling works in the newer games. Also, it's easy to get lots of flask upgrades pretty early, so if you don't at least keep your HP up to pace with your flask healing value you're wasting lots of healing.

Yeah, I guess getting the full benefit from a flask is a good reason to do it. But again, all my defenses are high, so the raw damage I'm taking from attacks is reduced pretty low. Just don't want to dump into Vigor when I can instead dump into Faith and increase the damage output of my weapon.

I am playing pure mage with currently 25 vigor which is 800 hp and I am level 95 . This 800 hp will reduce even further when I have Primal Glintstone Blade . Initially , I wanna stay at 18 vigor but I can’t even summon mimic ash which this hp .

So my point is … if you play Sorcerer , willing to dode , learn movesets , don’t mind getting one shotted by bosses . Vigor isn’t really important .

I am happy with my 800 hp . With primal glint stone blade talisman , my hp will be around 680 . Mimic Summon cost 660 hp and summoning will instant trigger Red Feather Branch Sword talisman which is around 20% Damage Boost . Pretty neat in bossfights .

Your defense stats increase passively everytime you level up so there's not much point in investing in "defensive" stats, other than vigor.

I've been exploring Altus recently. Haven't been one-shot yet. I can usually take two to three hits from the hardcore guys. Can usually get away to heal in time.

Vigor is probably the most important stat, but if you feel like you're ok, then just go for it dude. You can always respec your build later.
Spogg Mar 13, 2022 @ 5:52am
the benefits from vigor outweigh the benefits from defence
vigor is like cake and defence is like the icing on top

vigor makes up most of how much damage you can take with defence adding a little on top
you can have cake without icing but icing on its own is not a desert

Defense stats just do not scale as well as hp does. That is why people usually recommend getting Vigor to at least 40 ish because thats when you get the first diminishing returns.

That does not mean you can't beat the game with less ... its simply provides you more "defence" for your buck per investment compared to other approaches.

Going for defence is perfectly viable :3
Spogg Mar 13, 2022 @ 5:54am
also the softcap for vigor is 60, meaning don't level it past 60 since you start to get diminishing returns
Toadally Awesome Mar 13, 2022 @ 5:55am
You will find out yourself that you need a bare minimum of at least 40 Vigor in the late game unless you are a dodge god.
